Chris Evans Defends Anthony Mackie as Captain America Going Forward

Anthony Mackie plans to take up the mantle as the new Captain America in his own film, but based on speculation Chris Evans might reprise the role… he says, no chance.
News of Mackie starring in the upcoming Captain America 4 movie broke this week along with the director Julius Onah is told attached directly. This, of course, comes on the heels of Mackie’s Disney+ show – which ends with her accepting a CA badge.

You’d think that conclusion — which was made very clear on the show, after Evans’ character Steve Rogers had already passed the torch at the end of “Endgame” — wouldn’t be controversial … but apparently, among some fans, it is. And THR referenced it in the thread.
In response to the uncertainty surrounding Evans’ possible involvement in the new film and character, CE himself weighed in on Saturday … writing, “Sam Wilson is Captain America.”
The reason for this is a big deal… it seems to shut down trolls who, to this day, haven’t been cool with the idea of Mackie continuing as a titular superhero — a controversy that’s been heating up since 2019, when he was officially tapped. Chris Evans successor.
Much of the backlash from AM has been downright racist… with many saying that a black guy simply shouldn’t be allowed to take the role (even though that happens in the comics).
Now, Chris seems to be confirming that he’s done with “Captain America” and that Mackie will continue solely as a character … without Chris’ involvement going forward. Frankly, it makes logistical sense – Evans is portrayed as an old dude in the last “Avengers” movie… so having him stuck in the plot beyond just a cameo seems unlikely/unnecessary.
BTW, Mackie as the new Captain America carries a lot of weight. In the show, it is revealed – based on an earlier comic series that is canon – that the fictional history behind Captain America is dark, with the US government testing/infusing a super serum that gives him his powers in black soldiers while Cap is underneath. freeze. So technically Captain America was built on the backs of black people…a metaphor for our own real-life history, some say.
So… pretty poetic that Mackie/Sam is the one creating a new legacy. And yet, the debate about who is “entitled” to follow in Chris’s footsteps continues strangely, even after he has spoken.
