Chesapeake Tenants Win Inspection of Unsafe Conditions at Apartment Complex  – Los Angeles Sentinel | Los Angeles Sentinel

Hundreds of Chesapeake residents, outraged by ongoing maintenance problems at the 425-block building, have finally won an inspection of the entire building, which will take about six weeks.

On June 6, the Los Angeles County Department of Health and the Los Angeles Executive Code began an inspection of the Chesapeake apartment complex on Obama Blvd. in the Baldwin Hills / Crenshaw area.

Meanwhile, tenants and members of the Los Angeles Community Empowerment Alliance (ACCE) held a press conference to address the extensive maintenance issues of the building and the continuing failure of Pama V Owner President Mike Nijar to address them. Chesapeake’s tenants are demanding that the complex be taken out of Nijar’s control. After the press conference, tenants marched through the complex.

For years, tenants have complained of broken pipes leaking raw sewage into the building, parasites, toxic black mold and defective heaters causing carbon monoxide poisoning. The conditions in the property are so dangerous that some residents fell ill and went to hospital. So far this month, ACCE organizers have received about 140 complaints from Chesapeake residents about the conditions.

Eva Howard, a Chesapeake resident for six years, lives with mold, bedbugs and broken windows in her apartment. Her seven-year-old son fell ill with lead poisoning and had to be rushed to the emergency department of the Children’s Hospital. Once there he fell into a coma.

“He was sick, vomiting, unresponsive. I tried word of mouth on him. I did everything I had to do until the paramedics got there, “said Howard, a member of ACCE-Los Angeles.

She wants Pama and Mike Nijar held accountable for the conditions that led to her son’s illness. “I don’t have to bury my child for something the property manager did. I hold him responsible. “

Monday’s inspection is the latest and most extensive in a series of Chesapeake inspections that the Los Angeles Housing Department and the County Health Department have conducted over the years. Nijar, a real estate billionaire who owns thousands of properties in Southern California, has ithistory of operation of low-quality housing and unscrupulous business practices.

For weeks, Chesapeake’s tenants have been urging Pama and Nijar to make a complete overhaul of their units with the help of qualified and licensed contractors and to allow them to return after the repairs are completed. Pama and Nijar’s response to the demands is insufficient.

The tenants are asking the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office and the California Attorney General’s Home Group to intervene and hold Pama V Properties and Mike Nijar responsible for their neglect.
