Central Pa. company develops process to recycle leather

A Pennsylvania company has developed a process for recycling leather, and the founders say it’s a way to help the environment. Every year, tons of leather scraps are thrown away by all manufacturers, from boots to bags. Those scraps often end up in landfills. Sustainable Composites now recycles much of its leather into products called inspiring leather. “Currently, several different companies are working together to take and recycle them,” Franklin Fox said. Much of the scrap the company uses comes from Wilson, like Wilson Soccer. “We can truly reconstruct another discarded material and restore it to its original state,” Fox said. Tommy Tyman, whose father helped develop the process, is the company’s test lab. Leather scraps are crushed into a kind of fibrous fluff. It is mixed with chemicals to make a slurry, which is later dried and pressed into a recycled leather sheet. “I think it’s really interesting. “We are currently working with several different companies to take their stuff and recycle it,” said Franklin Fox.
