Can Taking Fish Oil Help Depression?

Fish oil isn’t a replacement for an entire depression treatment plan, and it’s not going to make symptoms disappear altogether.

But some evidence suggests fish oil could help alongside antidepressants and cognitive behavioral therapy, says Ashton Scherrer, PhD, a clinical psychologist with Providence Swedish in the Greater Seattle area.

How Do Omega-3s Affect the Brain?

“EPA and DHA help maintain the integrity of cell membranes, support neurotransmitter activity, and have anti-inflammatory properties,” says Nick Bach, PsyD, a clinical psychologist and the CEO of Grace Psychological Services in Louisville, Kentucky.

Inflammation is often linked to changes in structure or function of the brain that are associated with depression.

Higher ratios of EPA to DHA seem to be better at fighting inflammation and soothing symptoms of depression. Evidence suggests EPA could influence serotonin and dopamine pathways, which are key for regulating mood, says Dr. Bach.

Another study found that taking a supplement with more EPA than DHA helped people with both major depressive disorder and low-grade inflammation reduce fatigue and sleep problems.

Some fish oil supplements have more EPA than DHA, but only certain brands may include this information on the label or their website.

What the Science Says About Fish Oil for Depression

“Fish oil has mixed scientific support when it comes to helping with depression,” says Dr. Scherrer.

Omega-3s seemed to boost motivation (enthusiasm, alertness, and energy) in people with both depression and signs of inflammation in one randomized controlled trial.

Meanwhile, a review of research on fish oil’s ability to treat depression found that while some studies suggested fish oil could reduce symptoms, others detected no benefit.

Why are the results so varied? A complex web of factors contribute to depression, and fish oil may address only some of these.

You might benefit from taking fish oil alongside antidepressants, according to an observational study. People with mild to moderate depression who took both fish oil and antidepressants saw a larger reduction in symptoms than those who took either treatment alone.

What Fish Oil Can’t Do

Fish oil alone is generally not recommended as a treatment for depression, given the small to nonexistent average effect on major depressive disorder.

It also doesn’t appear to be effective for preventing depression among adults older than 50, according to a five-year clinical trial.

Even when fish oil does help, it’s absorbed and used by the body differently from an antidepressant. “Fish oil is first absorbed by the stomach, while a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) is processed through the liver,” Scherrer says.

Scherrer explains that SSRIs stop the brain from reabsorbing the serotonin we naturally release to use for various brain functions.

When antidepressants act on neurotransmitters, they change the way brain cells communicate, affecting mood.

It’s unclear whether fish oil acts in a similar way.

“We found that compared with the people who ate the control diet, migraines were reduced by four headache days per month in the high omega-3, low omega-6 group and by two headache days per month in the group that increased omega-3 intake and continued to eat the same amount of omega-6 fatty acids,” says MacIntosh.

Both the high omega-3 and high omega-3, low omega-6 groups also saw significant reduction in the number of total headache hours per day and the daily number of moderate to severe headache hours compared with the control group.

The authors point out that the average reductions of 1.7 headache hours per day and four fewer headache days per month in the high omega-3, low omega-6 group are comparable with improvements recently reported for Botox injections and monoclonal antibodies targeting calcitonin gene-related peptide. This suggests that dietary intervention could be an effective adjunct for managing migraine.

“This is a very impactful study. We’re always looking to make small changes in a patient’s lifestyle that can impact their headaches, and this research shows that dietary changes can make an impact in chronic pain, including headache,” says Kiran Rajneesh, MD, a neurologist and pain physician in Webster, Texas. Dr. Rajneesh was not involved in this research.

If you’re interested in exploring the effects of fish oil on migraine attacks but are unable to fill your diet with omega-3s or can’t always afford those types of foods, taking supplements that contain essential fatty acids may help, Dr. Rajneesh says. That’s where fish oil for migraine comes into play; it’s available in liquid, capsule, and pill form.

Low Libido, Erectile Dysfunction, and More

Research suggests that men with type 2 diabetes are more than three times as likely to have erectile dysfunction (ED) as men without type 2 diabetes.

 ED, which is defined as the inability to get or maintain an erection during sex, is a common complication of diabetes.

“Erectile dysfunction (ED) is the most common sexual dysfunction in men, including those with diabetes,” says Sharon J. Parish, MD, a professor of medicine who specializes in sexual medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City.

 And, while ED becomes more likely in older age, men with diabetes tend to get ED 10 to 15 years earlier than men without diabetes.

Testosterone not only plays a role in libido but also in getting and maintaining an erection. When testosterone levels drop, men with and without diabetes often develop ED.

But diabetes increases the risk of other complications that can contribute to ED.
For example, diabetes can accelerate the buildup of plaque in the arteries, a condition known as atherosclerosis.

 This causes the arteries to become narrower, which reduces blood flow to the penis and makes it more difficult to achieve and maintain an erection, says Houman.
In addition, some medications used by people with diabetes to treat related conditions can hinder erectile function, including beta-blockers, a class of high blood pressure drugs.

 Antidepressants, which are prescribed to many people with chronic conditions, also are linked to ED, says Houman.

Beyond those health and medication issues, other conditions may cause or contribute to erectile dysfunction, such as alcohol or drug abuse, smoking, and vascular disease.

Treatments for ED

For men with diabetes, there’s a significant ED remedy at hand: better blood sugar control. If your ED is ultimately caused by hyperglycemia, your complications can be lessened or reversed if you can keep your blood sugar in a healthy range.

“Most of us have been taught to limit or avoid salt, but low blood pressure is a different story,” says Ben Tzeel, RD, CDCES, the founder of Your Diabetes Insider.

Increasing your sodium intake can help raise blood pressure, but always consult with your healthcare provider first.

“Salt helps you retain more fluid throughout your body, which boosts blood volume and, eventually, raises blood pressure,” says Tzeel. “For people with low blood pressure, this is a good thing. It’s also temporary, which means you need to consume salty foods regularly. Eating a salty soup once a week isn’t going to be enough.”

Tzeel stresses that the quality of your higher sodium choices matters.

“Heavily processed products or canned foods might help your blood pressure but not the rest of your health,” he says.

The ideal remedy is to choose more whole foods that have added salt. Strive to balance salt and salty processed foods with nutrient-rich choices like fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains to support your overall health.

Stay Hydrated

Dehydration also plays a significant role in blood pressure management.

“Your body depends on adequate water intake for so many critical functions. Blood pressure is certainly one of them,” says Tzeel. When you aren’t consuming enough water, blood volume throughout your body decreases, causing blood pressure to drop.

Eat Small, Frequent Meals

The frequency and size of your meals matter, too.

“Big meals can actually cause your blood pressure to drop, [a response] called postprandial hypotension,” says Tzeel. While that drop in blood pressure after a large meal is temporary, it can become a common occurrence if you tend to eat two to three large meals per day.

Smaller, more frequent meals throughout the day help stabilize blood flow and digestion, reducing your risk of low blood pressure.

Adjust Your Exercise Routine

Regular physical activity supports cardiovascular health and may help regulate blood pressure. But people with hypotension should approach exercise carefully to avoid symptoms such as dizziness or fatigue.

Tzeel recommends the following exercises for people with hypotension:

  • Walking or light jogging
  • Swimming or water aerobics
  • Seated strength training with light weights
  • Gentle yoga or tai chi for improved circulation and balance

Tzeel also suggests that people with low blood pressure should:

  • Warm up and cool down thoroughly before exercising.
  • Rise slowly after floor-based movements to avoid head rushes.
  • Avoid exercises that require significant or rapid changes from standing and seated positions.
  • Stay hydrated before, during, and after workouts.

Switch Sleeping Positions

Sleeping on a flat surface can worsen hypotension symptoms in some people, specifically those who are sensitive to orthostatic hypotension.

 Orthostatic hypotension refers specifically to changes in blood pressure based on your posture or position, such as moving from a seated to a standing position.

Elevating the head of your bed slightly can reduce the risk of blood pooling and improve blood pressure upon waking. Consider using a wedge pillow or placing risers under the legs at the head of your bed to achieve this incline easily.

Wear Compression Stockings

Waist-high compression stockings can also help reduce blood pooling in the legs and promote blood flow to the upper body, helping to maintain steady blood pressure levels.

“Compression stockings are one of those items that are easy to dismiss at first,” says Szoke. “They just look like socks, right? They can help more than you might expect.”

Available in various strengths and styles, compression stockings are often recommended for those with either postprandial or orthostatic hypotension.

Manage Stress

“Don’t underestimate the impact of stress,” says Szoke. “Just like high blood pressure, low blood pressure can be related to that constant ‘go-go-go’ stress.”

Chronic stress and anxiety can affect the regulation of your body’s nervous system, leading to blood pressure fluctuations, says Szoke.

If your mental health challenges are affecting your physical health, it may be time to seek professional support. Stress reduction techniques you can try at home, such as meditation, deep breathing, or yoga, could also help keep your blood pressure steady in a safer range.

“If you can’t change the cause of your stress, it comes down to resetting how you go through your day,” says Szoke. “We can easily get used to living in that high-stress mode, but it wears on you. Is your body trying to tell you something? Don’t ignore it.”

Medication Options

When lifestyle modifications aren’t enough to maintain a healthy blood pressure consistently, healthcare providers may recommend the complementary use of medications. Treatments vary significantly based on an individual’s health status and the underlying cause of hypotension.

Medication options may include:

  • Dopamine increases blood pressure by stimulating heart rate and vascular constriction.
  • Droxidopa helps constrict blood vessels and treat neurogenic orthostatic hypotension.
  • Epinephrine is a powerful vasoconstrictor used for emergencies like anaphylaxis or severe hypotension.
  • Fludrocortisone is a corticosteroid that helps the body retain sodium, thereby increasing blood volume and blood pressure.
  • Midodrine raises blood pressure by constricting blood vessels. It’s commonly used for orthostatic hypotension.

“Typically, folks choose vegan cheese because they’re avoiding animal ingredients because of personal ethics. But a growing number of consumers are choosing vegan cheese because they believe it to be healthier than dairy-based cheese, and for its lesser environmental impact,” says Taylor Wolfram, RDN, who specializes in vegan nutrition in Chicago.

Health benefits of vegan cheese depend largely on which ingredients a specific one contains and what health issues you’re trying to address. Here are some ingredients commonly used in vegan cheese and their potential benefits.

  • Nuts A diet rich in nuts may improve blood lipid profiles.

  • Seeds Seeds, including pumpkin and sesame seeds, contain antioxidants, which are thought to play a role in heart disease and cancer prevention.

  • Tofu A higher intake of isoflavones, which are found in soybeans, and tofu, specifically, are associated with a lowered risk of coronary heart disease.

Vegan cheese could also be beneficial for people with lactose intolerance, since it doesn’t contain lactose.

Why You Need to Read the Label

Regardless of the ingredients you’re looking for or looking to avoid, it’s important to read the nutrition label on the cheese you’re buying, rather than assuming that the “vegan” label makes it healthier.

A number of vegan cheeses use coconut oil, which is high in saturated fat, as a major ingredient. Research shows that consuming coconut oil raises low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol more than consuming nontropical vegetable oils.

You’ll also want to check the ingredients list for any additives such as artificial colorings, dyes, sweeteners, or flavorings. If it’s not something you’d use in your kitchen, it’s probably not something you want in your vegan cheese.

It’s also important to make sure the sodium content per serving aligns with your daily goal. The recommended sodium limit is 2,300 milligrams (mg) per day or less depending on your age and potential health concerns, according to the 2020–2025 U.S. Dietary Guidelines. As a rule of thumb, look for items that have about the same number listed for calories and sodium; that’s to say, if a serving contains 200 calories, it should have no more than about 200 mg of sodium.

8 Things Sleep Doctors Want You to Know

Technology allows us to track more specific health measurements than ever before — including sleep. Research shows 1 in 3 Americans have used an electronic sleep tracker and nearly 70 percent of them changed their behavior because of what those devices showed.

But experts warn that what you can learn from your sleep stats, at least currently, has its limits.

1. Sleep Trackers Are Not Medical Devices

Sleep tracking technology has improved rapidly in recent years, but the majority of sleep trackers on the market have not gone through the rigorous testing required for approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Rather, according to a position statement from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM), sleep trackers qualify as “lifestyle or entertainment devices,” not medical devices.

This doesn’t mean sleep trackers can’t be useful tools, but it does mean that they cannot be used to diagnose or treat sleep disorders.

2. The Data May Not Be Accurate

Those numbers on your tracker may not be entirely correct.

“Many sleep trackers use an accelerometer, a device that measures how much you move, to estimate sleep,” says Michelle Drerup, PsyD, the director of behavioral sleep medicine at the Cleveland Clinic’s Sleep Disorders Center in Ohio. If you spend time in bed reading or scrolling through your phone, the lack of movement will likely register as light sleep, she notes.

By the same token, if you wake up in the middle of the night and stare at the ceiling without moving, the tracker won’t register you’re awake. It’s important to know that the data can be flawed in these ways, says Kelly Glazer Baron, MPH, PhD, a clinical psychologist with specialty training in behavioral sleep medicine and a professor at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City.

Some newer generations of sleep trackers, such as smartwatches, are sensor-based and include metrics like pulse oximetry, skin temperature, and heart rate in addition to movement.

But research shows that while these devices are good at detecting when someone is asleep, they are less reliable at detecting wakefulness and tracking sleep stages accurately.

3. The Most Accurate Sleep Tests Monitor Brain Waves

Testing in a sleep lab is far more precise than a movement-based tracker. Polysomnography (the type of test that sleep labs use) is considered the gold standard in measuring sleep.

These sleep studies monitor brain wave activity, eye movement, muscle tension, movement, and breathing for accurate measurement of the four stages of sleep, Dr. Drerup explains.
One study of 34 healthy young adults tested the performance of seven consumer sleep-tracking devices compared with polysomnography. The researchers found that overall, the devices tended to accurately detect sleep, but were less accurate than polysomnography at tracking wakefulness. The devices also displayed mixed results in their ability to accurately detect sleep stages.

4. Trackers May Encourage Technology Use Before Bed

One downside to wearing a device or using a sleep-tracking app is that they might prompt you to pick up and start using a mobile phone or other screened device before bed, which is a drawback because the light from your phone and other screens can make it tougher to fall asleep.

If your phone or another device is near you in bed so it can track your sleep, you may be more likely to hear alerts for incoming texts and emails when trying to fall asleep, Drerup says. The ideal bedroom setting is device-free. “Devoting the bed and bedroom to being a calm, relaxed environment is essential for having a healthy relationship with sleep,” Drerup says.

5. Sleep Trackers May Help You Notice Certain Sleep Patterns

The main health benefit of trackers is they can help you recognize patterns in behavior that may affect your health. “A sleep tracker can be helpful if you are trying to extend or lengthen sleep time because you don’t allow enough time for sleep because of a busy schedule or a tendency to binge-watch television shows before bedtime,” Drerup says. They can be a reality check for how many hours of shut-eye you are actually logging every night — and how many days in a week or month you are cutting your rest short, she says.

Drerup adds that trackers can be particularly helpful for people who suffer from insufficient sleep syndrome, in which people don’t spend enough time in bed to get an adequate amount of sleep.

If it takes you awhile to fall asleep or you wake up throughout the night, a tracker might alert you to how much sleep you’re actually missing out on.

6. Over-the-Counter Sleep Trackers Can’t Diagnose  Sleep Disorders

The landscape around sleep trackers is changing, and the technology is quickly improving. Currently, many of the commercially available sleep trackers are not designed (or FDA-approved) to diagnose sleep disorders or other health problems.

Samsung and Apple, for example, have both recently introduced features on their smartwatches that may detect signs of sleep apnea, but both companies make it clear that these devices do not replace a visit to the doctor.

Rather, they can help signal that you might have a sleep disorder and should see your physician for a proper diagnosis.

In 2023, the FDA cleared the Belun Sleep System for at-home sleep apnea testing. The wearable ring measures pulse rate and blood oxygen levels and uses AI algorithms to evaluate sleep-related breathing disorders. The device is only available with a prescription from a healthcare provider.

7. For Some People, Use of Sleep Trackers May Worsen Sleep Struggles

Interestingly, sleep trackers can make insomnia worse if people (in an attempt to sleep longer) end up spending more time in bed lying awake. “It may seem counterintuitive, but part of the behavioral treatment for chronic insomnia is to actually spend less time in bed trying to sleep,” Dr. Baron says.

Indeed, experts say that spending too much time in bed not sleeping can actually train the brain to associate your bed with not sleeping or unsuccessfully trying to fall asleep. And they also caution that over-attention to your sleep numbers in general can cause a level of anxiety that (you guessed it) interferes with your sleep.

There’s even a term for this phenomenon: orthosomnia. As described in a research paper, people with orthosomnia may have insomnia-like symptoms while obsessing about getting ‘perfect sleep’ because they’re so concerned with improving their sleep tracking stats.

To combat orthosomnia, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine advises putting all electronics away (which includes not looking at your tracker if you’re wearing it) at least 30 minutes before bed.

8. Tracker Data May Be a Game Changer for Sleep Researchers

The fact that your sleep last night was 20 minutes shorter than your nightly average generally doesn’t have sweeping implications for your health.

But the information from popular sleep tracking devices does present a potentially huge opportunity for sleep researchers. The previously mentioned American Academy of Sleep Medicine position statement, for example, notes that these devices could allow researchers to gather larger datasets about sleep and health trends that could identify previously unrecognized links between sleep and disease or health outcomes.

Federal Funding Cuts Are Worrying Epilepsy Advocates

For decades, the epilepsy community has depended on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to fund research and patient-support efforts to help people living with this often disabling chronic condition.

But after sweeping federal budget cuts, organizations that help Americans with epilepsy are left with little certainty about the future.

“What we do know is that all of the people who work in epilepsy at the CDC, all of their positions were eliminated as of last week, and there has been absolutely no direction or communication to us as to what we should do,” says Lisa Gallipoli, the executive director of the nonprofit advocacy group Epilepsy Alliance America.

For decades, the CDC epilepsy program has been one of hundreds of federal initiatives aimed at improving the health of Americans living with different chronic conditions, Gallipoli says. “There is no uncertainty about that,” she adds.

These funding cuts “will have repercussions for years and years to come,” she adds.

Cuts Are Part of a ‘Broader Restructuring,’ Government Spokesperson Says

In an emailed statement to Everyday Health, the press secretary for the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Vianca Rodríguez Feliciano, said, “The Epilepsy Program, previously part of the Division of Population Health, is undergoing changes as part of a broader restructuring to ensure resources are aligned with the CDC’s highest public health priorities.” (The CDC is an operating division with the HHS.)

Rodríguez Feliciano said the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), a survey that collects data on a wide range of health behaviors and risk factors, including epilepsy, will continue. She gave no information regarding other programs that support people living with epilepsy.

HHS announced plans in late March to eliminate nearly one-quarter of its full-time employees.

Nearly 1 in 100 Americans Have Epilepsy

About 2.9 million adults and half a million children in the United States have epilepsy, a chronic neurological disorder in which normal electrical and chemical activity in the brain becomes disturbed, which can result in seizures.

For about one-third of people living with the condition, current medications do not help, making patient support and drug development a priority for the epilepsy community.

What Does the Now Defunded CDC Epilepsy Program Do?

The CDC’s Epilepsy Program has collected data and funded research aimed at finding new epilepsy treatments, as well as supporting programs providing services and education for people living with the condition.

“This is a really boots-on-the-ground thing that the CDC helps with,” says Beth Dean, the CEO of the nonprofit advocacy group CURE Epilepsy.

The 2024 budget for the CDC’s Epilepsy Program was $12.5 million, according to the Epilepsy Foundation, a nonprofit group. Another $740 million went to the Brain Research Through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies (BRAIN) Initiative.

Millions more went to other programs related to pediatric epilepsy, a program focused on traumatic brain injury (which can cause epilepsy), and a neurology drug development program.

In 2021, the CDC provided the Epilepsy Foundation with $17.5 million, to be used over five years, for its projects to improve the quality of life and the quality of healthcare for people with epilepsy.

This federal funding supported first-aid training for parents, teachers, babysitters, and childcare professionals, as well as a special course teaching law enforcement officers how to recognize epileptic seizures.

Funding also pays for a support hotline, training for healthcare providers who aren’t epilepsy specialists, and education for people living with epilepsy.

“Without dedicated CDC staff to manage the Epilepsy Program, and if funding for the program is cut or eliminated, it will be very difficult for us to continue the work,” says Kaitlyn Gallagher, the public relations manager at the Epilepsy Foundation.

Dean says she fears additional cuts to epilepsy care and research in the United States, including cuts to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the world’s largest funder of epilepsy research.

New Cuts Add to Previous Defunding Efforts

Even before the cuts to the Epilepsy Program, researchers working on federally funded initiatives have seen money dry up.

A bill passed in mid-March cut funding for the BRAIN Initiative, which has been losing funding since 2024, by 20 percent, or $81 million.

Before that, an NIH proposal issued in February capped indirect costs — used to pay for lab upkeep, administrative staff, and other research overhead — at 15 percent.

“The long-term implications of that is we are in danger of losing a generation of researchers,” Dean said. “It’s crushing.”

Other federally funded research is conducted through the Department of Defense’s Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program, or CDMRP, which is facing its own steep cuts.

The program funds research into amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), traumatic brain injuries (TBI), and epilepsy.

“Epilepsy and TBI were eliminated from that. That research was looking at soldiers who got head wounds in service, and about 40 percent of them developed epilepsy,” Dean says.

Epilepsy Foundation

The Epilepsy Foundation works with a network of local affiliates to improve the lives of people with epilepsy by providing education, advocacy, research, direct services, research for new therapies, and creating communities. On their website, you can get information about their seizure first-aid training, including a course for law enforcement.

National Association of Epilepsy Centers (NAEC)

The NAEC provides resources for healthcare providers aimed at improving the care and treatment of people with epilepsy. It accredits epilepsy centers to ensure standards of care and publishes guidelines that determine what level of care people can receive at each center. Its website includes a full list of NAEC-accredited epilepsy centers across the country.

Epilepsy Alliance America

Epilepsy Alliance America was launched in 2018 and partners with local organizations to extend support on the ground. The alliance regularly hosts virtual meetups and has a subsidy program to help cover the cost of seizure ID products. They also host virtual first aid trainings and post information on where people can take in-person courses locally.

CURE Epilepsy

CURE Epilepsy has great resources for people who have recently been diagnosed with epilepsy. On its website, you can find patient stories, a calendar of epilepsy events, and information on a wide range of epilepsy therapies, from diet to surgery and neurostimulation devices.

American Epilepsy Society 

The American Epilepsy Society is an organization for healthcare professionals that supports research and provides clinical guidance on best practices for epilepsy care. The society hosts an annual meeting and publishes news and alerts related to epilepsy drugs.
