The Chicago Sky won the first WNBA championship in franchise history on Sunday. The team was ranked 6th in the league in the 2021 season, but fought from the first round of the playoffs and knocked out top-seeded Connecticut Sun in the semi-finals.

After that, they fought the tenacious Phoenix Mercury. Phoenix Mercury also fought from the first round to reach the WNBA Finals.

Among their many weapons is the basketball icon Candace Parker, which averaged 13.3 points, 8.4 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game during the season. Skyhead coach James Wade pointed out how Parker played the role of player-coach during his first season at Sky.

“You have a lot of success early on. You understand who you are early on … As a coach, when she says something, you have to listen. I have to believe that I have to, “he said. “She brings a lot in her experience.”

This marked Parker’s third final appearance. Her first was in 2016 when Parker helped the Los Angeles Sparks win the championship. Her 19.3 points, 8.7 rebounds and 3.2 assists in the postseason won the final MVP honor. Skyplayer worshiped her breath of knowledge and paid attention to her insights throughout the season. According to the center’s Stephanie Dolson, Parker’s role as player-coach felt natural.

“Actually, the coach (Wade) says a few things, but as a bystander, especially in the post section, she talks to us like a coach,” Dolson said. “She is so smart when it comes to basketball analysis that it was natural for us to listen and accept her not only as a player but also as a coach.”

Parker wanted to compete in his hometown in front of his lifelong supporters, but he also saw potential in SkyTeam.

“It’s like a lap to look up at the stand and see everyone playing basketball in front of you,” Parker said. “This is a special group. I think of how you face adversity. It’s a built character and revealed it.”

The 2021 WNBA Finals show WNBA growth, with Game 3 of the finals sold out and NBA and NFL players sitting on the courtside of the game. After winning the championship, Parker acknowledged how the legendary Kobe Bryant of the NBA and his daughter Janna contributed to the growth of the league.

“The advice I got from Vanessa (Bryant) before the match was to play in Gigi’s way. I think the playoffs are all over,” Parker said. “If Gigi can play, she’ll play hard, so I think that’s a big deal for our team.”

In Game 4, Parker scored 16 points, 13 rebounds and 5 assists. She had ownership in the last few seconds of the game. Noting that she won the WNBA title for the second time reminded her of the year of preparation.

“When I first realized I won the state championship, I had a flashback from high school, which was similar,” Parker said. “It was great to hug my dad, mom and family … I think it’s the moment you just have to embrace it.”
