San Diego County leaders want to make it easy for some local “micro-enterprise” to operate from the comfort of their home without breaking the law.

County supervisor Joel Anderson and vice-chairman Nora Vargas are leading efforts to legalize micro-enterprise home kitchen operations (also known as MEHKO) to boost the local economy.

MEHKOS is defined by California law as a new type of retail food facility operated by residents of private homes. MEHKO is not permitted in San Diego unless approved by the county leader.

“This is a movement happening across California, across the United States, and most recently the state has approved the county to legalize it, so that’s what we’re trying to do.” Anderson said. “We will allow staff to come back with plans on how to sell goods from home.”

Anderson and Vargas will present a letter from the Joint Committee at a meeting on Tuesday, September 14, to begin the process of permitting MEHKO to operate in San Diego County.

“They don’t have a license, they don’t have surveillance, which includes some of the surveillance at a very affordable price,” Anderson said.
