Sacramento, CA (AP) —California says fraudsters are stealing doctor credentials to file fake disability claims. The Employment Development Department said Thursday that it had suspended claims for 345,000 people with disabilities related to 27,000 doctors.
The ministry said most of these claims were probably fraudulent. But some of them are legitimate claims from people who cannot work because of an injury.
Currently, their failure checks are stopped. State officials said Thursday that their top priority was to stop false allegations and verify the identities of doctors to resume legitimate allegations.
Congressman Jim Patterson said some of his members hadn’t been paid for weeks.
