California Rodeo Salinas’ Big Week expects big crowd – Salinas Valley Tribune

SALINAS VALLEY – California Rodeo Salinas will celebrate 112 years of tradition this month, beginning Friday with Big Week, which is full of activities that promote and preserve Western heritage.

Many of the events have been going on for decades, providing fun for all ages. Organizers expect a large turnout this year, following last year’s rodeo held in September with pandemic-related modifications.

The rodeo carnival begins the Semana Grande on Friday 15 July and is open every day from 3pm to 11pm until Sunday 24 July at 295 Camino del Sol in Salinas. Presented by Smoot Family Chiropractic, the carnival offers affordable entertainment for families during Holy Week.

“We are very excited to bring the carnival back during Holy Week,” said Danny Little, chair of the carnival committee. “It’s a big part of the rodeo festivities and annual fundraisers, and we’re looking forward to seeing everyone here enjoying walks, games and more.”

CHILDREN’S PARADE

The annual Kiddie Kapers Parade, presented by Sakata Seed America, is a staple of Salinas ’hometown and also helps start the Big Week festivities. This 91-year-old parade will be held on Sunday, July 17 at 3 pm at the Salinas Center, formerly Salinas Old Town.

This year’s theme is “Bull-ieve in Yourself”, and young people are encouraged to dress up as they want to be – astronauts, scientists, cowboys, doctors, etc. – and there will be special prizes for the best dressed bullfighters. This is a tribute to the late freestyle bullfighter Ross Hill, who appears on the 2022 California Rodeo Memorial poster.

Hill, who was a fan favorite known as the “Alabama Slamma,” competed for many years in freestyle bullfights in Salinas, winning the championship in 2007, 2008 and 2018. He died in an accident in March 2021.

“It warms my heart that California Rodeo can honor Ross in this way,” said Fred Hooker, president of California Rodeo Salinas. “He meant a lot to our committee and community.”

The rodeo donated to the Hill Foundation, set up by his family to carry out his desire to help children reach their full potential, as a “small show of appreciation and to promote the cause,” Hooker said. More information can be found at RossHillBullfighter.com.

No prior registration is required for the parade, which is free for participants and spectators.

BAND CONCERT

Sergio Lizarraga’s MS Band, one of the most popular bands in Mexico, will play at the Salinas Sports Complex during Semana Grande on Saturday, July 16th. The concert, presented by Tequila Alderete, also features the opening act Los 2 de la S.

Youth, explosiveness and talent are the words that currently define the MS Band, created by seven teenagers who, after belonging to other prestigious groups, decided to form their own musical organization. The initials of their native earth in Mazatlán, Sinaloa, gave name to the group in 2003.

Always with firm goals, the group has earned the nickname “the highest grossing band”, a slogan that reflects the work done over more than 15 years of musical career.

Doors will open at 5pm and music will start at 7pm. The Salinas Sports Complex, a completely outdoor venue, is located at 1034 N. Main St. in Salinas.
