According to a total of the end of the day on the California Public Health website as of January 7, California reported 40,196 new cases of coronavirus, bringing the total number of infected people to 2,573,141.
In addition, 508 new deaths have been reported in California, bringing the total number of deaths in the state to 28,556.
There were 17 fewer patients admitted to California hospitals and 22,836 admissions across the state.
