Governor Gavin Newsom of the Democratic Party of California has defeated an attempt to expel him from his job.
On Tuesday, Newsom became the second governor in US history to survive the call.
Voting ended at 8 pm and the first result was that most of the ballots were voted “no” to the question “Will Gavin Newsom be recalled from the Governor’s Office?”
As of 9 pm, the results ranged from 67% “no” to 33% “yes”, with less than 33% of districts reporting partially.
Millions of votes are to be counted, including ballots cast on Tuesday. However, The Associated Press, NBC, ABC, CNN and Fox News all predict that the recall will fail and Newsome will continue to take office.
The recall took place in anger at Newsome’s actions during the COVID-19 pandemic.
He is the fourth governor in US history and faces the second recall in California. He was elected for a landslide less than three years ago.
Among the candidates who want to replace him, Republican Larry Elder led the pack with 43% of the votes.
