A San Francisco State University student was swept out to sea while swimming in Pacifica

PACIFICA — A San Francisco State University student was swept out to sea Thursday morning while swimming at a beach in Pacifica, officials said.

The incident was reported around 10:30 am on Esplanade Beach. In a news release, Pacifica Police said the college student was swimming with two others when he was “struck by a large wave and pulled away from the shore.”

The fellow students returned to the coast and called 911 for help.

Police said Pacifica police officers and North County Fire Department firefighters searched the area without success. The U.S. Coast Guard also assisted in the search for the student.

The student was a Caucasian male in his 20s, 6 feet 1 inch tall, weighing 215 pounds, and had brown hair.

“The entire SF State community wishes a safe recovery,” the university said in a statement. “Our thoughts are with the students’ families, friends and classmates. We thank the Coast Guard and Pacifica Police for their continued work.”
