Newsom has mild symptoms and will remain in isolation at least until Thursday and until he comes out negative, his office said in a statement. The Democratic governor plans to work remotely during this period.
His office said Newsom, 54, would begin a five-day treatment with Paxlovid antiviral.
The governor’s office said it had informed the delegation of New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Arden. The two leaders met at San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park on Friday to announce a climate change partnership. Ardern tested positive for the virus earlier in May.
The governor’s office said it did not know how Newsom contracted the virus. He has been vaccinated and received his second booster vaccine this month.
Other public officials recently announced that they were positive for the virus, such as Washington Gov. Jay Insley on Wednesday and Vice President Kamala Harris last month.
This morning, I tested positive for COVID-19 and am currently experiencing mild symptoms. Grateful that you were vaccinated and for treatments like Paxlovid.
I follow health instructions and will be isolated while working remotely.
We wish you all a safe and healthy Memorial Day weekend.
