California family ‘appalled’ by arrest in faked abduction

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) – The family of a Northern California woman who was charged with fraud in her own theft in 2016 have been accused of the manner in which she was arrested.

The family said on Friday that Sherri Papini, 39, was “ambushed” in front of her children on Friday. They said he searched for himself if questioned. The family did not respond to complaints against him.

Papini went missing while sailing in 2016. She contracted fevers and bruises when she returned three weeks later about 150 miles from her home.

Papini explained that he had been told it had been stolen by two “Hispanic women.” Authorities say it is a lie. They said Papini was with a former friend in Southern California and had killed himself to support his cause.

His lawyer did not immediately respond to letters seeking comment.
