California doctor reveals a stranger listed her home for RENT on Airbnb

IN California doctor has publicly reported a stranger renting her house Airbnb – and then asked her to book her own property when she asked to take down the fraudulent post.

Shireen Heidari, a palliative care physician and family physician at the Stanford Department of Medicine, shared her story on Twitter this week in a bid to remove the mention.

‘Hello @Airbnb – I’ll really appreciate you contacting me. Someone listed my house as their rental, and when I sent them a message asking them to take it down, they offered to [the] option to book my own house, ‘Heidari, 36, tweeted Monday.

‘We have reported it, but the mention is still active. This is not ok, ‘she added.

Airbnb does not currently require potential hosts to provide proof of ownership to get a listing activated on their website, which means anyone can rent a home without the company verifying that they actually own or lease it.

Heidari stated in a subsequent tweet that she was informed of the mention after the city sent letters to the previous owners at their address ‘about having to report rent tax.’

When she called to inquire about the letters, a city employee shared the Airbnb listing links with her.

“Thank you for catching it,” she wrote. ‘Otherwise we would have probably found it by people who show up at our house (!!)’

Heidari did not show whether or not she had confirmed how the person came across information about or images of her home in the first place.

A few hours after her first tweet, she went back to Twitter with an update, saying ‘the mention is down after she was reported as fraudulent.’

‘We have provided proof of ownership. It is not yet clear what the next steps are, ‘she added. There were a lot of messages and calls today. With gratitude to the customer service rehearsal that stayed on line at 11pm to help sort it out. ‘

In another update, Heidari confirmed that the issue was finally resolved.

‘Wear the support all. After this tweet, another call to customer service, and a DM from @Airbnb – the mention has been removed, ‘she wrote.

‘Would like to acknowledge the customer service call on the phone that stayed with me at 11pm to sort this out and call back to let me know it was removed.’

It seems that Heidari and her husband, Brian Granaghan, recently moved into the house and are having problems with it.

Granaghan, a software engineer at Google, responded to his wife’s first tweet on Airbnb on Tuesday, saying it was just the latest debacle they have faced.

“So this was fun. And there will be more, ‘he wrote. ‘Just wait for the story of how last week a company we’ve never heard of put a loan on our house with the option to foreclose in 90 days on a project that the last owner was working on but never started. Who knows what next week will bring. ‘

Granaghan also called our Airbnb for its listing policy, saying that even though the listing was deleted, the other person’s account is still active.

‘Since this blew up, a few notes: 1. @Airbnb’s response was not to ask the listing account to show proof of ownership. They asked us. “@Airbnb just deleted the listing instead of closing the account that offered to book my wife our own house,” he wrote.

Airbnb’s process of approving and verifying a new host does not currently require users to provide proof of ownership or lease for the property they plan to list.

In November 2019, the company’s CEO, Brian Chesky, on that Airbnb planned to move to a ‘100 percent verified’ system by the end of 2020.

However, its website states that the only information a host is required to provide is its legal name, home address, date of birth, place of birth, and citizenship or nationality.

The home address provided does not have to be the same address as the property mentioned.

‘This is the physical address where you live, which may differ from your Airbnb address (es),’ the company explains on its site. ‘It is used to verify your identity and will not be displayed on your listing or shared with guests.’

Other Twitter users claimed that similar things had happened to her when she responded to Heidari's tweets about her house being reported without her knowledge.

Airbnb states that first-time listings may require further confirmation, such as documentation that officially linked a host to the property, but this is not a rigid requirement.

Potential hosts ‘may also be asked to provide a government ID.’ Another means of verification, which is also not required but may be requested, is to provide a security code which will be sent to the address listed.

Heidari’s experience inspired others to share their own Airbnb horror stories, and a number of people claimed that similar things had happened to them.

“This happened to me once, but on a different side,” commented one Twitter user. ‘I booked an Airbnb, paid, appeared, knocked on the door, and the owner had no idea who I was or why I was there. Someone was cheating on her when she cheated on her. ‘

‘It happened to my niece – she booked @Airbnb abroad and the house was fraudulently placed. I think we should all check our houses, because they do not! ‘ someone else wrote.
