California county’s secession measure will be on 2022 ballot

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (AP) – Voters in Southern California’s San Bernardino County will have a chance to decide in November whether they want the county to secede from the state.

The county’s Board of Supervisors voted 4-0 Wednesday to place the separation measure on the 2022 ballot, the Southern California News Group reported. An officer was absent.

The measure will go before the board again next Tuesday for final approval. The primary plan is to put this question to voters on Nov. 8: “Do the citizens of San Bernardino County desire the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors to study all options to receive its fair share of state and federal resources, including appropriations. ?”

Although the administration voted for the measure, they were not enthusiastic supporters of the separation, the news agency reported.

Supervisor Joe Baca Jr. said he won’t divest from the state but wants to learn if the state and residents are getting more money than they currently have.

“I think we’re going to look at everything we can do to improve services for our residents,” Baca said. “I don’t like segregation. I’m proud of California. I love California.”

The split proposal was first floated by real estate developer Jeff Burum at the board’s July 26 meeting.

Secession requires approval by both the California Legislature and the United States Congress.

According to county spokesman David Wert, a financial group made a per-capita comparison of federal and state income received by California counties based on data from the state administration. The data shows San Bernardino County ranks 36th out of 56 counties for per-capita income received from state and federal governments, Wert said.

“If the worst thing that comes out of this is a donation that will be a weapon for our state officials to fight for more money for us” it will be accepted, said the official. directed by Curt Hagman.

Home to 2.1 million people east of Los Angeles, San Bernardino has the fifth largest population in California and the largest county in the country. That’s more than Connecticut, Delaware, New Jersey and Rhode Island combined.
