Governor of California
Incumbent Gavin Newsom is facing two dozen skeptics about his re-election, but no one seems to be scared of him in terms of polls and fundraising. The Democrat maintains a high level of confidence and full campaign funds after rejecting a nationwide recall attempt last fall.
Result: Within minutes of the polls closing at 8pm, the Associated Press predicted that Newsom would advance to the second round in November, with his challenger still unclear.
The candidate approved by the state GOP is state senator Brian Dahle, who represents a district in the Sacramento area. Dahle led the contestants in the first batch of election results.
Result: Dahle was scheduled to finish in the top two and face Newsom in the second round in November.
Another interesting candidate is Bay Area environmentalist Michael Shellenberg, author of “San Fransicko: How Progressives Ruin Cities”. The former Democrat is a candidate without party affiliation.
Vice Governor of California
Incumbent Vice-Governor Eleni Kounalaki also faces several challengers, including Democrats William Saacke and Jeffrey Morgan. Republicans Angela Underwood Jacobs, David Fennell and Clint Saunders. NPP candidate David Hillberg and PFP candidate Mohammad Arif.
Attorney General of California
Republicans believe they have a chance this year to oust Democratic nominee Attorney General Rob Boda.
But first they have to fragment which challenger has the best chance.
Two Republicans are running in the June 7 primary. But so is Sacramento County Prosecutor Anne Marie Schubert, who resigned from her Republican seat four years ago and is running as an independent.
The GOP hopes a tough message on crime will resonate with voters.
The state Republican Party has approved former federal prosecutor Nathan Hochman. Also running for the Republican nomination is Eric Earley, who was the chief legal adviser for the failed ouster attempt by Gavin Newsom.
The following is a complete list of candidates:
- Anne Marie Schubert (independent)
California Secretary of State
A list of Republicans hopes to overthrow California Secretary of State Shirley Weber.
Republican challengers include Rob Bernosky, Rachel Hamm, Raul Rodriguez and James Paine.
Green Party nominee Gary Blanner and NPP candidate Matthew Shincuanda are also challenging the current president, hoping to become the next foreign minister.
Treasurer of the State of California
California Democratic and current Treasurer Fiona Ma hopes to retain her position by winning re-election against Republicans Andrew Do and Jack Guerrero, as well as PFP candidate Meghann Adams.
Superintendent of Public Education
Incumbent Tony Thermont is seeking re-election for a four-year term and has six challengers:
- Marco Amaral, special education teacher
- Joseph Campbell, who specializes in Montessori education
- Lance Christensen, Vice President of Education Policy and Government Relations at the California Policy Center
- Jim Gibson, a cybersecurity expert and former Vista School Board Administrator
- Ainye Long, professor of mathematics and chair of the San Francisco Unified
- George Yang, software architect
Among the top tasks the department has at its disposal is to help students get back on track, as national reports show declining student reading levels during the COVID-19 pandemic.
U.S. Senate Results
There were two separate elections for the US Senate seat representing California. Alex Padilla was appointed to fill the position last year after Kamala Harris became vice president. Padilla had to run in separate races on the ballot both to complete the remaining term that had not expired and for a full term starting next year.
Result: Padilla was scheduled to finish in first place in both Senate races.
