Cal Maritime sailing wins eighth Harbor Cup – Times-Herald

For the eighth time in the history of its program, the Cal Maritime sailing team won the Harbor Cup. Keelhaulers is the first title since 2020. The regatta was canceled due to COVID-19.

Cal Maritim also won titles in 2017 and five in a row from 2011 to 2015.

The cadet athletes Kyle Collins, Jacob Fisker-Andersen, Brock Paquin, Maddy Rivera, Max Roth, Cooper Smith, Hailey Thompson, Django Tomlinson and Justin Zmina were responsible for winning the 2022 Keelhaulers title.

Friday’s festivities started on a positive note for the Keelhaulers, winning the first of 10 races scheduled in the three-day competition. Winning bullets in the final races played that afternoon, Cal Maritime entered Saturday’s competition for first place overall, winning the 2018 Navy Harbor Cup with an eight-point cushion.

Once he took first place, after the start of the weekend’s race, the Keelhaulers didn’t let anyone take him off the top of the results table, as they finished each day of the competition in first place.

When the 10-team field was back in the water, the Keelhaulers had a rough start, finishing seventh in the first of four races scheduled for Saturday. However, they gave a perfect response that evening as the competition continued into the evening.

Cal Maritim held on to its top spot by finishing third and second in the next two races before finishing the day’s action with another bullet. This result not only boosted Cal Maritim’s entry into Sunday’s final regatta, but also widened the team’s lead to seven points from the Navy, which finished second in eight regattas.

Shortly after they all returned to the docks, the race officials received a protest and a counter-protest about the seventh race. After hearing the arguments of the participating boats from the regatta committee, Cal Maritime remained in first place, but its cushion grew to 13 points after being disqualified in that particular Navy race and relegated to fifth.

When all was said and done, the Keelhaulers jumped from second to first in that seventh race to pick up their fifth bullet in the first eight races of the Harbor Cup. UC rose to second in Santa Barbara, Rhode Island (third) and Hawai’i (fourth).

On Sunday, the Keelhaulers took full control of their situation by placing fourth and second in the final regatta at the Harbor Cup, finishing eighth in the 14 regattas played at the Port of Los Angeles.
