In a few years, Sacramento International Airport won’t look the same as it does now.

The airport will undergo a major renovation as part of a new plan called SMForward, officials announced at a news conference Wednesday morning.

Expected to total $1.3 billion, the project will Terminal B needs up to 8 new gatescar park, new car rental center, covered pedestrian street, new ground transportation center.

At a press conference, Steven Clark, deputy director of airport commercial development at the airport, said SMForward is not just designed to meet travel needs with new gates, restaurants and parking lots.

“There’s actually a down payment for a long-term investment in the Sacramento area,” Clark said. “This opens the door to opportunities for companies and professionals to be part of the ever-evolving airport experience.”

According to Clark, SMForward is focused on partnering with local businesses, contract opportunityWhen the plan kicks off, it will create more than 800 jobs in the construction industry each year for the first four years, said Sacramento County Supervisor Phil Serna.

What is the project timeline?

A $1.3 billion expansion is planned over the next five years.

One of the first parts of the project is the construction of a pedestrian walkway connecting Terminal B and Concourse B, Clark said. This he plans to start in the summer of 2024 and be completed by late 2025.

“Fortunately, much of that work is actually being done airside where the aircraft operates, so it won’t significantly impact guests passing through the facility,” he said.

Construction of SMForward’s new gates and other components will typically take place between 2024 and 2027. Clark said he expects the project to be completed by late 2027.

Any disruption to travel or road closures?

Some roads will be closed and detours will be made during the construction period.

Clark said the airport can work with contract partners to identify travel and road impacts early and prevent them. There may be paved passageways and buildings.

The flight is likely to continue as scheduled. Clark said the SMF does not expect airlines to delay, cancel or stop flights.

Where will the $1.3 billion come from?

It’s not from your local tax.

SMForward’s funding comes from federal grant opportunities, user airport fees such as car rental fees, and fees paid by airline partners.
