Brooklyn Half Marathon 2022: Runner dies after collapsing at finish line

NEW YORK – A man has died after collapsing at the finish line of the Brooklyn Half Marathon on Saturday.

Police say the 30-year-old man from Brooklyn collapsed shortly before 9 a.m. after crossing the finish line in Connie Island.

The New York Road Runners reported that the man immediately sought medical attention and was rushed to Coney Island Hospital.

It is not clear if the heat was a factor, police believe he may have had a heart attack. The medical examiner has not yet determined the cause of death.

The New York Road Runners issued the following statement:

We are deeply saddened by the death of a participant after RBC Brooklyn Half 2022. Our thoughts and condolences are with the runner’s family and loved ones.

The 30-year-old male runner collapsed after the race. He was immediately picked up by medical staff on the spot and then transported to Coney Island Hospital. NYRR has medical staff stationed from start to finish throughout the race, ready to respond immediately to the medical needs of all runners, spectators, volunteers and staff. Runners who need further attention are transported to appropriate medical facilities.

The health and safety of our runners, volunteers, partners and staff remains a top priority for NYRR. In coordination and consultation with city service partners and weather experts, the NYRR closely monitored the weather before and during the race. Throughout the race, weather temperatures ranged from the low 60s to the high 70s.

The New York Fire Department said EMS monitored 17 people, one refused medical attention and the other 16 were taken to hospital with five of them in serious condition.

More than 22,000 runners were expected to run from Prospect Park on the Coney Island pedestrian walkway in Saturday’s half marathon, which returned to full capacity for the first time in three years.

Temperatures exceeded 80 degrees Fahrenheit (26.7 degrees Celsius) by noon in Brooklyn. A heat tip that warns that high temperatures and high humidity could cause heat sickness remains in effect throughout New York until 8pm on Saturday.

The identity of the runner who died has not yet been announced. This is the first death of a runner in the Brooklyn Half Marathon since 2014.
