Books donated to Fresno Unified as part of Magic of Storytelling

FRESNO, California (KFSN) – In an effort to spark creativity and stimulate imagination in young people, students at Kirk Elementary School in southwest Fresno received some new books on Friday – many of which contained favorite characters from world of Disney and Star Wars.

“I chose Anna and Elsa and the Secret River because I really wanted to know about it,” says Brielle Wilson.

Disney has donated millions of books to First Book – a non-profit organization that gives books to educators who serve children in need.

ABC30 and its parent company, Disney, are excited to help promote literacy by donating 5,000 books to Fresno Unified.

Kirk Elementary was one of six schools selected to receive the new books

The first graders were among the first students in Friday’s special presentation who chose two books to take home.

“When we sometimes talk about food deprivation and the environment, we are not talking about literacy,” says director Tobaise Brookins. “How many books there are in a house and how many words children come to school when they enter our campus is very vital.”

Brookins says getting children to read at a young age is vital to their development.

“More polite, first, second and third, you learn how to read after that, you read to learn and that’s where we want our kids to go,” Brookins said. “A place where every student is literate when they get to 3rd grade, so they can read to learn, explore and access any subject.”

As part of the effort to spread the magic of storytelling, we also helped in the special presentation by reading to some of the children. Learn how you can help celebrate the magic of storytelling by visiting our site, abc30-dot-com.
