board of supervisors letter to state sheriff

The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office faces yet another controversy.

The latest addition to Sheriff Steve Bernal’s growing list of concerns is a letter from the Supervisory Board to the Fair Political Practices Committee (FPPC), investigating the Sheriff’s department for possible conflicts of interest. I am asking the institution to do so.

The request for investigation stems from the donation of Enterprise Rent-A-Car to the California Sheriffs’ Association convention in Monterey County in 2019.

In May 2021, the sheriff’s department requested that the supervisor approve the lease agreement with Enterprise and own the car for unmarked / investigation purposes. If the sheriff’s department chose Enterprise for a previous donation, this could turn out to be a violation of Government Code Section 87100 or 1090.
