Man charged with hate attack on Southern California woman

SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) — A 25-year-old man has been charged with spraying hot peppers on a woman in a hate attack in Southern California, prosecutors said Tuesday.

Johnny Deben Young faces multiple charges at the Orange County District Attorney’s Office, including assault and illegal use of enhanced tear gas for the use of deadly weapons and hate crimes.

According to prosecutors, Young posted videos of himself pepper spraying and harassing women online and declared himself a so-called “incel.”

Police say Young is suspected of confronting a female victim outside a Costa Mesa bar and assaulting several in attacks from November 2021 to April this year.

District Attorney Todd Spitzer said in a statement: “These accusations send a very strong message to the entire community that we do not tolerate violence against women in any form.

Young was arrested in San Mateo County and returned to Orange County where he appeared in court on Monday. He was held in lieu of $500,000 bail and his arraignment was postponed to his October 10th.

A message seeking comment was left at the public defender’s office.
