Black Congresswomen Are Begging Joe Biden to Declare a National Emergency Regarding Abortion Rights

An hour before Roe v. Wade was poured and federal abortion rights overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court, 20 black congressmen urged President Joe Biden to declare a national public health crisis over abortion and reproductive rights.

In an open letter published by USA todayfemale lawmakers, all House Democrats and all members of Congress’s Black Caucus called on Biden to “use all the executive to Roe v. Wade has been dismantled. “

Less than five hours after the women made their letters public, their worst fears came true. On Friday, the Supreme Court struck a landmark incident which guaranteed the right to abortion at the federal level.

With the end roe, trigger laws several conservative majority states have enacted a ban on abortion altogether. These bans disproportionately affect black women, the letter said. The congresswoman also outlined the history and treatment of discrimination faced by black women and people who may become pregnant due to the long-established bias of medical and health care systems.

According to the letter, nearly two-thirds of black women consider abortion care to be essential care, and 81% of black women want abortion to be readily available in their communities.

“A tough study estimates that banning abortion across the United States would lead to an estimated 21 percent increase in maternal deaths across all races and a 33 percent increase maternal deaths among black individuals, ”The team led by Ayanna Pressley wrote. “Forcing people to carry an unwanted pregnancy has been shown to strain themselves physical and mental health at risk as well.”
