Biden blames NRA for lack of gun control as Jimmy Kimmel asks: ‘Why are you so optimistic!’

President Joe Biden has insisted he will not use executive orders to regulate guns to prevent his predecessor’s ‘abuse of the constitution’.

In a lengthy appearance on ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live !, Biden accused NRA intimidation of failing his administration to introduce gun control measures.

The president said elected Republicans were threatened with primary challenges if they supported a ‘rational gun policy’.

Kimmel said: ‘We are halfway through the year, there have been 27 shootings at schools. Why have we done nothing about it? ‘

Biden replied, ‘I think a lot of that is intimidation by the NRA.

“I think you need to start calling out to people,” Jimmy Kimmel told President Biden during his sit-down last night in Los Angeles

‘This is not your father’s Republican Party. This is a MAGA party. It’s a very different Republican Party. ‘

Biden referred to potential challenges posed by NRA-backed candidates as elected GOP officials restore gun control.

He said: ‘You find people worried, I believe, that if they vote for rational weapons policy, they will become primary.’

During last night’s 20-minute interview, Biden commented on a variety of other national issues, including climate change, Roe v Wade, and inflation.

Kimmel pleads with Biden to ‘start after people’ and adopt a tougher stance against his opponents.

The host of the ABC talk show challenged Biden to use executive power, stating that Trump “had passed them off as Halloween candy.”

Biden refused to emulate the behavior of his predecessor, he said.

President Obama used many executive orders in an attempt to curb gun violence, with little success.

First Lady Jill Biden sat in the front row at Kimmel’s studio in Los Angeles hours after giving a starting address at LA Community College.

Biden, who appeared in good spirits, exclaimed, “By the way, I’m Jill Biden’s husband.”

The couple exchanged compliments, with Kimmel asking if he could ask Biden ‘some serious questions’.

Biden replied, ‘I do not mind having a conversation with someone who is really smart,’ and drew applause from the crowd.

The beleagured president, who is struggling amid record-breaking approval ratings, repeated a recent favorite line: ‘This is not your father’s Republican Party.’

Although Biden has taken some unilateral steps over firearms, the president said he was not interested in stepping outside the boundaries of his authority.

“I do not want to emulate Trump’s abuse of the constitution and constitutional authority,” he said.

Biden said he knows some people feel that ‘Republicans don’t play it safe,’ [so] why are you playing the square? ‘

“Well, guess what,” he said. ‘If we do the same as they do, our democracy is literally in danger. No kidding. ‘

Kimmel replied, ‘It’s like playing Monopoly with someone who does not continue or will not follow any of the rules, and how do you ever make progress if they do not follow the rules?’

“You have to send them to jail,” joked Biden.

At another point in the interview, Kimmel suggested that he was disappointed in the progress made on issues such as climate change and abortion.

“We’ve gone backwards,” he said.

Later, Kimmel sympathized with Biden’s challenges, particularly the forthcoming Supreme Court decision that is expected to overturn Roe v Wade, which legalized nationwide access to abortion.

“What a terrible job you have,” Kimmel said. ‘I’m glad you’re doing it. But, boy or boy, this seems like a bad thing. ‘

Biden said he was looking at executive orders that could help with access to abortion – ‘we are looking into it now’ – but said the best solutions were through legislation and elections.

If the court Roe v. Wade reverses, Biden said, ‘it will cause a mini-revolution and they will vote many of these people out of the office.’

When Kimmel suggested that Biden be a yeller, the president said he “has never been more optimistic in my life.”

Kimmel interjected quickly: ‘Why are you so optimistic? It makes no sense! ‘

Biden said he pinned his hopes on young people, the “best educated, least biased, most generous generation in American history.”

“This generation will change everything,” Biden said. “We just have to make sure we don’t give up.”

Biden is frustrated by his poor poll ratings amid concerns over high gas and energy prices, lack of baby formulas, and lack of progress on various legislative fronts such as voting rights and abortion rights, such as gun safety.

His advisers hope to revisit their messages in the coming weeks, hoping to focus on the positive elements of the economy, such as job growth and wages.

“Inflation is the bane of our existence,” Biden said.

He criticized U.S. oil major Exxon Mobil for making fat profits, but not drilling new wells or refining more gasoline and instead buying back its own stock.

“I mean, it’s just ass – excuse me – it’s backwards,” Biden said.

Biden’s first stop in Los Angeles, where he attended the Summit of the Americas, was Kimmel’s Hollywood studio. First Lady Jill Biden was in the audience, along with Biden’s granddaughter Naomi and her fiancé.

Biden’s only previous appearance late last night as president was in December, when he spoke remotely with Jimmy Fallon The Tonight Show.
