Biden, Newsom Mentions SLO County Boy, Search Continues

President Joe Biden and California Gov. Gavin Newsom mentioned the search for 5-year-old Kyle Doan, who went missing from San Miguel during a storm-damaged tour in Aptos on Thursday.

“Jill and I pray for him and our family,” Biden said near the pier at Seacliff State Beach.

The two spoke with residents in Santa Cruz County to learn about the damage caused by the storms that hit California on January 9th and 10th.

A total of 21 people died as a result of the bad weather. This includes a woman from Avila beach, Karen Bucat, who was devastated by the floodwaters in her car.

Doan, a kindergartener at Lillian Larsen Elementary School, was swept away by his mother in a flood on the morning of January 9th. He was on his way to school with his mother, Lindsay Doan, who teaches at Lillian Larsen.

“This was difficult. 21 lives were lost,” Newsom said. “That five-year-old boy is not included.”

“We had over 200 search and rescue workers arrive last week and all they found was one shoe, that one Nike shoe,” he continued.

“And hopefully, miracle, miracle, he’s all right.”

SLO County Sheriff’s Office Continues Search

In San Miguel on Thursday, members of the Sheriff’s Department’s K9s, search and rescue, dive teams, and drone teams continued their search of San Marcos Creek and parts of the Salinas River.

San Marcos Creek is a tributary of the Salinas River, and the two rivers meet just off Route 101 north of Paso Robles.

About 12 to 15 Sheriff’s Department personnel searched Doan on Thursday, said Tony Cipolla, a spokesman for the agency.

The sheriff’s office said it plans to search all week after rain interrupted operations over the weekend.
