Fifth immigrant bus from Texas arrives in downtown Los Angeles – Daily News

LOS ANGELES — Another bus carrying immigrants from Texas arrived in downtown Los Angeles on Saturday, making it the fifth bus to arrive there since June 14, Mayor Karen Bass’ office said.

“A bus carrying immigrants from Texas arrived at Union Station today at approximately 11:30 a.m. Pacific time,” the mayor’s office said in a statement. “The city has continued to work with our faith partners, as well as city officials, counties and nonprofit coalitions, to implement a plan that was developed earlier this year.

No further information was immediately available about the recent arrival.

The LA Welcome Collective said the migrants came from Brazil, Chile, China, Colombia, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras and Venezuela.

The group, made up of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, Clergy and Lay Coalition for Economic Justice, Los Angeles Central America Resource Center, Humanitarian Immigrant Rights Coalition, Esperanza Immigrant Rights Project, and Immigration Advocate Law Center, issued a statement Wednesday.

“The LA Wellcomes Collective reiterates our commitment to working with our partners in the City of Los Angeles and County of Los Angeles to receive and guide asylum seekers as they arrive,” the LA Wellcomes Collective said. “As a united front, we want to be a beacon of hope for those seeking safe harbors and to advocate for all human beings to be treated with dignity and respect, regardless of their immigration status. Until we find ways to fix and improve, we will try to do everything possible to make the best use of our limited resources.”

The Archdiocese of Los Angeles issued the following statement in response to the arrivals Saturday afternoon.

“…our Archdiocese was founded by immigrants and we will continue to welcome our immigrant brothers and sisters with open arms. We are honored to be a part of the important work undertaken by the LA Welcomes Collective and each of our partner organizations. Our work in helping immigrants is a work of mercy that imitates God’s love for His people.”

Texas Governor Greg Abbott recently declared border areas in the state “overflowing,” suggesting more migrants could be transported.

“A small border town in Texas is still overwhelmed and overrun with thousands of illegal immigrants from Mexico,” Abbott said in a statement after the first bus arrived. “Los Angeles is a prime destination for immigrants, especially now that city leaders have recognized their self-declared sanctuary city status. Our border communities are on the front lines of President Biden’s border crisis, and Texas will continue to provide this much-needed relief until President Biden does his job to secure our borders.”

In June, the Los Angeles City Council unanimously passed a motion directing the city to draft a “Sanctuary City” ordinance that, if passed, would prohibit the city’s resources, property, and personnel from being used for federal immigration enforcement.
