Senator Josh Hawley thought he had a question for Berkeley law professor Khiara Bridges, but he ended up getting one when her oratory skills left him speechless and embarrassed.
Smug, mansplaining insurgent Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO) turned law professor Dr. Berkeley’s Khiara M. Bridges has just made a progressive celebrity, although that’s certainly not what he intended. In a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing Tuesday on the legal implications of the recent overthrow of the Supreme Court Roe v. calf, Bridges testified on family law and reproductive rights issues. Hawley thought he was trolling Bridges by taking advantage of her A splinter issue of abortion rights and trans-inclusive languageand thought maybe he’d get himself a winning soundbite.
But dr bridges splintered Hawley to the woodshed, as reported by KRON4. Watch the glorious 90-second exchange in full below.
Berkeley Law Professor Khiara Bridges: “I want to acknowledge that your questioning is transphobic and opens up trans people to violence.”

Hawley initially thinks he’s going to pin Bridges. “You used a phrase, I want to make sure I understand what you mean by that. You spoke of “pregnancy-capable”. Would that be women?”
Bridges is unfolded. “A lot of cis women are fertile, a lot of cis women aren’t,” she replies. “There are also trans men who can get pregnant, as well as non-binary people who can get pregnant.”
She adds, practically laughing at him: “We can recognize that this affects women while at the same time acknowledging that it affects other groups. These things are not mutually exclusive, Senator Hawley.”
Then she turns the tables. “I want to acknowledge that your questioning is transphobic and exposes trans people to violence by not acknowledging them,” she tells him flatly.
Hawley gets defensive. “Wow, are you saying I open people up to violence by asking whether or not women can get pregnant?”
“I would like to point out that five transgender people attempted suicide,” she points out.
“Because of my question?” he smokes. “So we can’t talk about it?”
“Because you deny the existence of trans people and pretend you don’t know they exist–” she tries to explain, but Hawley, of course, cuts her off.
“I am denying the existence of trans people by asking you if you talk about women being pregnant?”
Then she plays Hawley at his own game. “Do you think men can get pregnant?” she asks.
“No, I don’t think men can get pregnant,” he replies.
“So you’re denying the existence of trans people,” Bridges concludes.
“And that leads to violence?” asks Hawley, grasping, and now nervous himself. “Is this how you run your classroom? Are the students allowed to question you or are they treated like that?”
“We’re having a good time in my class, you should join us,” she replies calmly. “You would learn a lot.”
dr Bridges is an instant folk hero now, so let’s get to know her. Corresponding her biography from UC Berkeley, dr Bridges was a college graduation speaker who speaks three languages, is a classically trained ballet dancer, and has been published in the Harvard Law Review, the Stanford Law Review, and the Columbia Law Review. She is the author of the books Reproductive Race: An Ethnography of Pregnancy as a Site of Racialization (2011), The lack of data protection rights (2017).
And don’t tell Senator Josh Hawley, but her latest book is titled Critical Race Theory: A Primer (2019).
