Benefit of intraoperative urinary catheter questioned in hernia repair

Abdominal pain of urinary catheters does not reduce the risk of postoperative urinary retention (PUR) after laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair, according to a study published online June 15 in JAMA Surgery.

Aldo Fafaj, MD, from Cleveland Hospital, and his colleagues authorized patients with inguinal laparoscopic surgery. hernia corrected in six disciplines as well community hospitals to place a catheter of urine after general anesthetic injection and removal at the end of the operation (patients 241) or no place for urinary catheter (patients 250).

The researchers found that overall, 44 patients (9.1%) developed PUR, but there was no difference in the amount of PUR between catheter groups and non-catheter groups (9.6 and 8.5 percent, respectively). While no bladder injury was found, a patient in the catheter group suffered a urethra injury after surgery with an introduction to emergency department with PUR resulting in suprapubic catheter line.

“Immediate clinical failure with the potential for minor but serious complications provides a compelling argument for abandoning the use of conventional catheters during laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair in patients who did not urinate early, ”the authors wrote.
