You used to want to hang out in a place that feels like an IRL version of HBO’s Pineapple Suite The white lotus? Now you can, with the kind assistance of Belles Beach House, a new resort-style restaurant in the heart of Venice, transmitting retro, surf and tiki culture from the 70s.
Provided by Wish You Were Here, the hospitable group behind Santa Monica Elephant and Ivli in West Hollywood, Belles is a stone’s throw from both the Pacific Ocean and Venice’s sign on Windward Avenue. Hawaiian Izakaya’s dinner choices include sushi and tropical twists of Japanese favorites, including mochiko karaage chicken (or bites, as the starter menu looks forward to you in parentheses).
Inside you will find a dining room lined with palm trees and bamboo with elements of retro tiki style built into the entire space. Sun loungers and high-top furniture give the impression of a lounge in a restaurant that is likely to be the next trendy Westside meeting place. Despite the lack of a gloomy atmosphere, Belles still conveys the atmosphere of a mid-century tiki bar with hanging walls and a hand-carved Hawaiian statue welcoming guests to the door, as well as locally crafted ceramic lighting above the bar.
The Belles cocktail menu focuses on tequila and mezcal, not rum, and serves drinks in retro glass tiki dishes. The restaurant also plans to offer lighter daily cocktails without added sweeteners during lunch, which will come later this fall. For reasons of stability, they also turn the remnants of the pressed juices used in the latter into simple syrups used at night.
Like Elephanté, Belles plays dual roles as a late-night restaurant and lounge. From October 21, DJs will play a “jungle-inspired” mix of disco and tropical house from Thursday to Sunday.
Belles Beach House debuted tonight at 24 Windward Ave in Venice. Initial working hours: Mon-Wed 17-23; Thu 17:00 – 1:00; Fri, Saturday 17:00 – 2:00; Sunday 17: 00-12: 00
