IN California hiker narrowly avoided being killed by a mountain lion thanks to her furious Belgian shepherd, Eva, who suffered severe injuries helping staby off the attack.

“I will ever be able to live by how great and loyal she is to me,” said dog owner Erin Wilson, 24.

Wilson was walking with her pet on the Big Bar Pass on May 16 in the rural area of the Trinity River of Northern California, when the wild cat attacked her, swiping her left shoulder through her coat.

“I shouted ‘Eva!’ and she came running, ‘said the 24-year-old walker. “And she hit the cat very hard.”

Wilson said the mountain lion appeared to be exhausted, but still outclassed the 55-pound Belgian malinois, who is 2 and a half years old.

“They fought for a few seconds, and then I heard them start crying,” Wilson said.

The cougar sank his tongue into Eva’s head and held on tight, even as Wilson hit it with her fists, rocks, sticks and whatever else she could find. The walker even tried to stick out the cat’s eyes.

The mountain lion lifted the owner off with its hind legs.

“They fought for a few moments until I heard them shout,” Wilson said on the crowdfunding site. GoFundMe. ‘The cat had her on the left side of her head. The next few minutes I tried everything I could to free her. ‘

Wilson walked to her car to get a band of iron to hit the creature and marked passerby, Sharon Houston, who had a PVC pipe and some pepper spray.

The creature finally released after Houston doused it with a blast of chemical foil and left.

“I think it’s safe to assume that this dog probably saved her life,” said Capt. Patrick Foy of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. Sacramento Bee.

It was a hectic trip to the vet’s clinic about an hour away, Eva started having cramps halfway through the ride.

“I did not think she would make it every time it started,” Wilson said.

The Malinois suffered two skull fractures, a punctured hollow cavity and destroyed swelling around the left eye, which blocked their vision.

“She’s not out of the woods yet, she’s heavily sedated until we can be sure the pressure in her head is reduced,” Wilson said. “The vet is optimistic.”

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife is investigating the attack, collecting DNA samples from the dog’s wounds and will try to catch the cougar, officials said.

Attacks on humans by mountain lions are rare, but if they want to capture the animal, it is dropped.

Wilson said that if Eva continues, she will shower her gifts, her favorite hugs and a steak dinner.

“My dog is my hero and I owe her my life,” she said.
