Irvine-Beckman blended his talent with plenty of pull and moxy to advance to the CIF Southern Section Division 1 Women’s Tennis Final.
That blend wasn’t enough to win the championship. The Patriots lost to Marlboro 12-6 on the home court of Dave Sills Lower Peters Canyon Park in the final on Friday.
Beckman finished the delayed season of coronavirus with a record of 14-5 and advanced to the CIF-SS Division 1 final for the first time. The Patriots defeated Marlboro in the final and won the Division 2 Championship in 2017.
Beckman finished second in the ever-tough Pacific Coast League after the perennial Power University.
Women’s tennis is the fall sport of all other high school sports years. The COVID-19 pandemic has had a major impact on the sports calendar, including moving some sports like girls’ tennis to the spring months.
Beckman sophomore doubles player Allisonve, who teamed up with junior Sunjana Benkita Krishnan on Friday to win two sets, thanked her for the opportunity to play and she and her teammates took part in the CIF-SS Division 1 Championship. I was delighted to have made it to the match.
“I’m really happy about how this year was,” she said. “Last year we reached the second round, and this year we made it to the finals. It’s a result in itself.”
The dominant player in the Division 1 Final was Marlboro’s senior single player, Arianna Stavropoulos. With a powerful yet relaxed ground stroke and fast serve, Stavroplos, who signed a statement of intent with the University of California, Davis, swept three games 6-0, 6-0, 6-0.
Beckman has won the first seed to compete in the tournament. Marlboro, a private school for girls in Los Angeles, was seeded third after advancing to 8-0 in the mission league.
Mustang on Friday won another title in Division 3 in 2006 and the second CIF-SS Women’s Tennis title.
Beckman coach Nick Friend has realized that Marlboro is probably too good for the Patriots. He also understood that Beckman’s players would do everything they could on Friday.
“We’re going to scrap, quarrel, and fight,” said Friend. “I’m not going to win the 10 or 12 ball rally, so I have to win another way. We’re junkyard dogs fighting to the end.”
