Early Friday morning, a young bear was found roaming the streets of Newbury Park.

Police received a report of a small bear near the Borchardt Skatepark after midnight on July 9.Timothy Roman Acorn.. He said a Ventura County Sheriff’s agent had followed the animals for about 45 minutes before returning to the open space.

He said the Fish and Wildlife Service did not address the area as it only intervenes when animals pose a threat.

“The little bear had a complete tour of the Kimber / Fallbrook / Mayfield / Reino neighborhood before passing through the Albertsons parking lot,” said Newbury Park resident Zilmahon. Acorn..

Captain Eric Busho said bear sightings “occasionally” occur in the Conejo Valley.

“I remember chasing around Westlake a while back,” he said.

Busho said the bear was probably looking for water.

“The problem lies in heat and drought, and probably no natural water source, so he probably has to go for a sprinkler,” said the captain.

Bear sightings are unheard of in eastern Ventura County. In May 2020, after a 100-pound bear was found in Simi Valley, it was sedated by fish and wildlife authorities and transported to remote areas of the Los Padres National Forest.

A black bear was discovered in Malibu Creek State Park in 2016, and another black bear was killed in 2014 at Westlake Village’s 101 Freeway Off-Ramp. Another bear was witnessed at Westlake Village in 2006. The bear was roaming the city for about five hours before it disappeared.

In May 2004, a bear was found wandering in the garden at Agoura Hills, relaxing in a jacuzzi. In August of that year, another bear was found in the Thousand Oaks garage near the 23 Freeways and the Reagan Library.

Roman said he couldn’t confirm whether the bear found on Friday morning was a black bear or a black bear.

“It’s not a polar bear. It’s not a mountain lion, it’s not a bobcat. We know it,” he said.
