ATM Skimmers Targeting EDD Debit Cards Found in Thousand Oaks – NBC Los Angeles

Officials said Thursday that several ATM skimming devices were found at a local bank in Thousand Oaks that targeted unemployed debit cards in California.

According to the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office, five so-called “deep insert skimmer” devices were discovered between April 13 and April 28, without revealing the location of the affected banks.

The first ATM skimmer was discovered by an ATM technician inside a walk-up automated teller machine, and the second skimmer was discovered four days later at a bank drive-up on April 17th.

The other three devices were found on April 28th at three separate walk-up ATMs.

According to the sheriff’s office, the “deep insert skimmer” is identified as a wafer-thin fraud device designed to fit snugly into the card slot of an automated teller machine.

According to authorities, scammers usually install pinhole cameras that are glued or taped to the outside of the ATM and used to obtain the victim’s PIN number. According to the sheriff’s office, this, along with other data obtained from debit cards, allows these criminals to make fraudulent withdrawals from the victim’s account.

Authorities say these cards are a major target for fraudsters, as California Employment Development (EDD) debit cards do not contain EMV chips that encrypt data. According to the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office, investigators determined this was the case for a recently discovered ATM skimmer.
