As California mask mandate lifts, schools and families are divided

California has returned the controversial issue of masking to school district officials to decide when Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Monday that the The term of the school mask would end on March 12th. Now, district officials are trying to decide what is best for students and how to adapt when families are so divided over COVID-19 protocols.

The state has also given school staff the option to go without a mask if approved by the county public health office and the school district.

Some districts have already made decisions about masking, sending letters to parents explaining their plans. Most stress that masks are still mandatory until March 11 and that the district will follow the state’s recommendation and “strongly recommend” after that date, though it will not require them.

Other messages are more vague, leaving parents scratching their heads, not knowing if “highly recommended” means that masks are still needed or optional.
