Armed suspect taken into custody after Oakland police officer shot, hospitalized

Oakland, Calif. (KGO)-Oakland police say armed suspects peacefully surrendered after shooting and injuring police officers on Telegraph Avenue on Wednesday morning.

Police officers were shot dead at 2400 blocks on Telegraph Avenue, west of Lake Merritt, shortly before 7:30 am, according to Oakland police. Officers are in stable condition at the hospital and are expected to survive.

Police say the suspect surrendered peacefully after a barricade at an apartment on Martin Luther King Jr. Way and W. Grand Avenue near the I-980 highway at 2100 blocks. The suspect is currently in custody and the knife has been recovered.

Witnesses told ABC7 News that police had evacuated people from the building where the suspect was.

Auckland police confirmed that the gun had been recovered at the shooting site.
