Aphantasia Phenomenon: What Is It?

While ships ply the vastness of space, the human brain remains one of the least known things on the planet. Then, several years ago, scientists discovered the  Aphantasia  phenomenon. It turns out that about 2% of people on earth live without fantasy. So it is not a disease, but just such a unique feature.

Aphantasia Definition

The Aphantasia definition is easy to understand if you parse the word into its constituent components:

  • “A” with translates as “without”;
  • “Phantasia” is like “fantasy.”

If you put everything together, you get a person without imagination. We are talking not so much about the complete absence of invention but about the lost opportunity to present an image with closed eyes.

So, ordinary people can close their eyes and within 3 – 10 seconds imagine a particular object or area. A person with Aphantasia doesn’t have this ability. That’s the fundamental difference.

Conducting a simple Aphantasia test quiz will not be difficult: being in a calm environment with your eyes closed, you have to imagine a blue triangle or any other geometric shape. If you succeed, then you do not have this feature, and you can breathe easily.

If you failed to present the subject, this is also not a reason to be upset. Currently, Aphantasia has not considered a disease and does not require treatment. Instead, think of it as a unique feature or even a highlight of yours. Often they do not affect a person’s life in any way.

Where Does Aphantasia Come From?

Many scholars who make up the Aphantasia definition argue that this is a natural phenomenon. In addition, there is an opinion that such a feature can be acquired due to a concussion or severe emotional stress. But there is no data to confirm this now.

Scientists find other causes. Today a person uses relatively little fantasy and memory in general. With the advent of the Internet, it’s easier for us to go to Google than find information in our minds. Aphantasia may be an unnecessary function, and the human brain is gradually giving up on it. Of course, the first conversation about Aphantasia took place long before the appearance of the first computer. Still, even then, there were already enough reference books, newspapers, and calendars not to keep the entire archive. Such processes do not occur suddenly, so it can be pretty challenging to track them.

Is There A Chance To Get Rid Of Aphantasia?

If the Aphantasia test quiz is positive, you have two options:

  • Accept everything as it is;
  • Start to fight and “re-educate” your consciousness.

The first option is as simple as possible, but the second requires a lot of patience.

Aphantasia cure does not involve the use of medication because it is not a disease. Nevertheless, methods are now being developed to improve the state of memory and come closer to solving the Aphantasia problem. They suggest:

  • Using  improve memory app;
  • Increase the spectrum of emotions
  • Reading of books;
  • Travel more;
  • Correction of nutrition.

So, research has shown that when a person begins to fantasize, the same part of the brain responsible for positive emotions is activated in the brain. Experts advise more often to watch bright and beautiful pictures or films, visit unusual walk-in places, and enjoy the scenery. Then, before going to bed, try to imagine everything you saw.

Why is it better to train before bedtime? Polls show that people with Aphantasia have very vivid and beautiful dreams. Today there is no example of a person completely getting rid of this feature, that is, a person who learned to reproduce an image in their mind a few minutes before ultimately falling asleep. It is an indication that it is theoretically possible to solve this problem.

Aphantasia cure is unlikely to help you completely get rid of such a feature now. Still, you will get as close as possible to a good result, improve your memory state, and feel more comfortable and confident.
