A person familiar with the decision says Darwin Hamm has accepted the offer to be the next Los Angeles Lakers head coach.

The person spoke to the Associated Press on Friday on condition of anonymity, as the deal was not made public.

The 48-year-old Hamm gets his first coaching job as the 28th coach in Lakers history. He has been Mike Budenholzer’s assistant with the Milwaukee Bucks since 2018 and played a significant role in their run for the 2021 NBA title.

Hamm will succeed Frank Vogel, who was sacked one day after the Lakers ended one of the most disappointing seasons in NBA history, scoring 33-49 and missing the playoffs.

The Lakers failed despite another impressive season by LeBron James, who welcomed his new head coach on social media even before the move was made public.

“So damn BAD !!!!!!!!” James tweeted. Congratulations and welcome to Coach Dham!

Hamm will be the 15th black coach in the NBA right now, the most ever.

Hamm was Kobe Bryant’s 2011-13 assistant Lakers development coach at head coaches Mike Brown and Mike D’Antoni. Hamm then spent five years with the Atlanta Hawks under Budenholzer, developing a reputation as an effective communicator with versatile tactical knowledge.
