Angels use bullpen game to beat White Sox for 6th straight win – Press Telegram

CHICAGO – This wasn’t the game the Angels planned, but it still couldn’t get much better.
Forced into a bullpen game due to illness of scheduled starter Noah Syndergaard, Los Angeles still beat Chicago White Sox and Lucas Giolito 5-1 on Friday night, their sixth straight win.
Relievers Jimmy Herget, Austin Warren, Archie Bradley, Aaron Loup, Ryan Tepera, Mike Mayers and Raisel Iglesias teamed up to hold the White Sox to three hits. At one point, they retired 18 batters in a row.
They received a top-down offensive production and a brilliant defense.
The Angels had a 2-0 lead before launching their first pitch, thanks to Taylor Ward’s solo home runs and warming up to Shohei Ohtani.
Ward led the game with his fifth homer of the season and fourth of the week. He later doubled home an insurance run in the ninth.
Ohtani made his fourth home run of the season. His shot went wide. He also hit a single in the middle of the field, a flight to the center field and a ground ball in the middle, all indicating that he might not be throwing the ball as much as he did when he fell. Ohtani has eight hits in 21 innings at bat in his last five games. His average is up to .247 and his OPS up to .732, both of which are better than the major league average.
Anthony Rendon is also showing signs of improvement. He doubled in both spaces, the second led in the third race of the angels. He also made two sensational plays at third base, with a ball on the ground and an in-line drive.
Jared Walsh also had a double push against a left-handed pitcher. Walsh is trying to prove that he can beat the left-handers so that he is not grouped.
It was enough support for a bullpen that worked mostly perfectly.
Herget started, and director Joe Maddon said before the game that the best case scenario would be three Herget innings. Although he gave up a race in the first, he retired from the six he faced in the second and third.
Warren then took charge and threw two perfect innings, thanks to a sharp defense. Mike Trout stole an extra-base shot from José Abreu with a catch on the fence to end the fourth inning. Rendon’s backhand shot from a hard throw ended with a fifth.
Bradley took over in the sixth and retired the White Sox in order. Loup worked around a single in the seventh, and then Tepera released the eighth.
The Angels tried to survive without Iglesias, but Mayers allowed two of the first three batters in the ninth to arrive, so Iglesias came in for the final two outs, getting Luis Robert to fly out with the loaded bases to end his sixth save. .
