Angels’ Shohei Ohtani makes All-Star Game as a pitcher too – Press Telegram

BALTIMORE – Shohei Ohtani did it again.

The two-way Angels star was named pitcher for the All-Star team on Sunday, so for two years in a row he was selected as a pitcher and position player for the All-Star Game.

Ohtani, who was selected as the American League starter DH for the July 19 game at Dodger Stadium, is the only player in baseball history to have been an All-Star pitcher and hitter.

“It’s a huge honor and I would like to give my best for all the people who voted for and supported me,” Ohtani said in a statement released by the Angels.

Angels coach Phil Nevin said it’s good for the sport that Ohtani throws and beats in the All-Star Game.

“I think it’s amazing,” Nevin said. “This game is on the big stage and everyone can see the best players in our game and of course it’s on both sides of the ball. I think that’s what all the fans want to see when they see him make an entry on the mound and then see how to paste.

“We can see him every day. We’re a little spoiled. I know that being on the west coast, fans on the east coast can’t see him too often. Being able to tune in and see both sides of Shohei is pretty special for everyone.”

There are two questions left about Ohtani’s participation in the Dodger Stadium events.

Next week, we’ll know if Ohtani will compete in the Home Run Derby, as he did last year.

The day before the game, we’ll know if Ohtani is going to be the starting pitcher, as he was last year.

All of this adds to Ohtani’s workload, who has played 84 of the Angels ’87 games this season.

“I never care what he does,” Nevin said. “Everything will be regimented. I’m sure you already have it planned all day and how it’s going to turn out. I never worry about the physical appearance of what Sho does. Let me know if you’re ever tired. Let me know if you have to leave a game. It’s pretty awesome. with what he knows of his body. “

The Angels essentially removed all of Ohtani’s playing time limitations before the 2021 season, putting him in charge of when he rested, and the results were a season and a half like never before.

His performance in 2021 was good enough to become the unanimous MVP of the American League, and this year he was a little better as a pitcher and a little worse as a hitter.

Ohtani is hitting .256 with 19 homers and a .833 OPS. His selection on Houston’s Yordan Alvarez (1,058) as a DH starter is primarily a reflection of his popularity among fans. (Alvarez was placed on the injured list on Sunday anyway).

However, the players voted for the pitchers and there are few arguments that Ohtani is among the most deserving starters in the league.

He has an effectiveness of 2.44 on 81 innings, with 111 strikeouts and 20 bases per ball. He hasn’t allowed a career won in his last four outings.

Tampa Bay Rays left-hander Shane McClanahan (1.73 ERA) and Houston Astros right-hander Justin Verlander (2.00) would also be the top contenders to start the game.

From a purely statistical perspective, each of them would be a more deserving headline than Ohtani.

However, last year there were also headlines that have been making better seasons than Ohtani, although he was still selected as a starter because in the end the game is a display for the entertainment of the fans.

In addition, it is less complicated for Ohtani to prepare as a pitcher if he is a starter who has been asked to pitch relieved.
