‘American Idol’ winners: From Kelly Clarkson to Chayce Beckham, where are they now?

LOS ANGELES — American Idol has paved the way for people to realize their dreams of becoming music stars in the last 20 years.

Some “Idol” winners have become superstars, while some who lost the “Idol” prize are still finding the star.

Below is a list of the previous 19 winners and more on what they have achieved since becoming winners American Idol.

1. Kelly Clarkson
The first American Idol singer to go on to win the platinum title on 3 albums, win numerous Grammy Awards and Billboard Music Awards and feature a daily talk show. Clarkson, who was 20 at the time of her victory in September 2002, also broke a decades-old Beatles record with the coronation song, “A Moment Like This”, which was the fastest to reach. number 1 on the Billboard Hot. 100.

2. Ruben Studdard
The Alabama native of Birmingham won first prize in 2003, beating Clay Aiken, who is now running for Congress in North Carolina. Studdard has released several albums, won a Grammy nomination and made his Broadway debut in 2018.

3. Fantasia Barrino
Fantasia Barrino, like Jennifer Hudson, won the coveted title in 2004. She received numerous Grammy nominations and won her first Grammy Award for Best Female R&B in 2011. Fantasia has also appeared on Broadway starring The Color Purple in 2013.

4. Carrie Underwood
Season 4 winner Carrie Underwood has sold more than 70 million records worldwide and has won numerous Grammy Awards, Billboard Music Awards and American Music Awards. She is also a 3-time winner of ACM and CMA. In 2008, Underwood was inducted into the Grand Ole Opry. She has also written a fitness book and launched her own fashion line for fitness.

5. Taylor Hicks
The fifth season featured incredible talent, including Katherine McPhee, Chris Daughtry and Kellie Pickler. Everything went to find success. Idol’s champion this year was Taylor Hicks, who at 29 became Idol’s oldest winner. Hicks released 3 studio albums, appeared on Broadway and was the first Idol winner to win a long stay in Las Vegas.

6. Jordin Sparks
A year after the oldest winner was crowned, Jordin Sparks became the youngest winner at the age of 17. The Arizona Native debut album went platinum. Sparks has also appeared on Broadway and made her big screen debut in Sparkle with Whitney Houston.

7. David Cook
Missouri-based David Cook won the Idol title in 2008. He has released numerous albums and starred on Broadway in Kinky Boots.

8. Chris Allen
In what was considered a reversal, Kris Allen defeated Adam Lambert for the Idol crown in 2009. Allen has released several albums since the victory.

9. Lee DeWyze
Lee DeWyze had a solo career and a band, which produced two albums, even before taking the Idol stage. Since winning the title in 2010, DeWyze has released 7 more albums.

10. Scott McCreery
Season 10 featured a close rivalry between Scott McCreery and Lauren Alaina. McCreery, then 17, won the award. The North Carolina native’s debut album has been certified platinum. He has since released several albums, recorded a number one country hit with “Five More Minutes” and opened for Brad Paisley and The Band Perry.

11. Philip Phillips
Phillip Phillips, originally from Georgia, was successful after winning Idol with the great success of “Home”. He also toured with John Mayer, released several more albums and played a diamond smuggler in an episode of Hawaii Five-O.

He also had an unforgettable audition for “Idol” starring Stevie Wonder “Superstition” and Michael Jackson “Thriller”.

12. Candice Glover
She auditioned for Idol three times before finally winning over audiences in 2013. Candice Glover released a debut album after her victory, but local Carolina has not recorded since.

13. Caleb Johnson
The winner of American Idol in 2014 was a real rocker. Caleb Johnson even appeared with KISS during the show. He released a solo album after the victory, but later formed a new band called Caleb Johnson and the Ramblin ‘Saints.

14. Nick Fradiani

Connecticut Nick Fradiani released an album entitled Hurricane after his season 14 victory. He also toured with rock band The Alternate Routes and toured nationally on The Bronx Tale.

15. Trent Harmon
Season 15 winner Trent Harmon beats La’Porsha Renae for the crown. The Mississippi native followed his victory with the release of an EP in 2016 and a studio album 2 years later entitled “You Got ‘Em All”.

16. Mandy Pop
The two-hour finale of the 16th season featured winner Maddie Poppe singing a “Rainbow Connection” with Kermit the Frog. In an additional twist during the finale, Maddie and second Caleb Lee Hutchinson announced that they had started dating. They gave a medley of “Somewhere Over The Rainbow / What a Wonderful World” after the announcement.

17. Lane Hardy
The 20-year-old Laine Hardy appeared in season 16 and returned to win it all in 2018. He released his first album last year. “Here’s to Anyone” includes 11 songs, including 2 written by the Idol winner.

18. Just Sam
In the first remote final due to the pandemic, 5 contestants participated. New York Just Sam, once a subway singer, won the crown. She signed a record deal with Hollywood Records but parted ways without ever releasing an album.

19. Chase Beckham
The season 19 finale featured a fierce rivalry between Chayce Beckham, Grace Kinstler and Willie Spence. Beckham, from Apple Valley, California, won the title. He is touring now and has released a duet with Linday Bell entitled “Can’t Do Without Me”.
