‘American Idol’ finale 2022: Finalists Noah Thompson, HunterGirl and Leah Marlene belt it out in last performances

LOS ANGELES – Voting came in and the new “American Idol” was named! Noah Thompson takes home the crown.

“It’s amazing for me to believe that so many people voted for me like that, you know, to make me the next American Idol,” Thompson said. “I did not expect this experience to end like this, so, I’m surprised dude.”

The three finalists sang Bruce Springsteen’s music in a bid to win the title.

HunterGirl came in second in the competition and Leah Marlene in third.

Thompson, Marlene and HunterGirl have been good enough to impress the judges all season, and in fact, it is fair to say that the trio thrilled them from the start.

Sunday’s finale was like a free concert. Contestants, judges and some big names in music appeared at a 3-hour, full of music party.

Among the many musical guests: Earth, Wind and Fire, Melissa Etheridge, Flo Rida and Michael Bublé.

Carrie Underwood was scheduled to appear in Sunday’s final, but failed.

“There was a COVID report on Carrie Underwood’s team,” said presenter Ryan Seacrest at the start of the show. “Well, following the protocol, she can not show up tonight. She’m sorry, but you can see her on her Denim & Rhinestones tour. This tour is coming this fall, okay. Well, go see it.”

Win or lose, all three finalists described their time on “American Idol” as a life-changing experience.

“I got on the show and I never know what to expect, but I know I’re going to leave with so much experience, so many people to talk to for the rest of my life,” HunterGirl said.
Finalist Leah Marlene says she loves the energy of the live audience. For her, this whole experience was a great celebration.

“Music is about sharing a moment with other people and so, for example, having people eating, like, that makes sense, is enjoying it together and being together,” Marlene said.

At 19, Noah Thompson is the youngest of three.

“I remember going in, I saw the judges. Dude, I’m scared out of my mind,” Thompson said. “I’ve never been so nervous in my life, you know? But now, it’s people who are literally taking that life out of you.”

“American Idol” returns for the 21st season.
