Amazon support members trying to help subscribers on Twitter apparently didn’t fully understand the geography of the world when they suggested to users that Northern Ireland wasn’t part of the UK.
Chris Jones tweeted to his Amazon Help account on Saturday asking why he couldn’t see the Autumn Nations Cup, an international rugby tournament live-streamed on Amazon Prime. After troubleshooting some possible technical issues, the helper believed that he found the issue. The match was only available to Prime members in the UK.
As Jones states in his reply, Northern Ireland is certainly part of the United Kingdom and actually represents the United Kingdom and the United Kingdom of Northern Ireland. Students with a history of the 20th century will remember that the 1998 Good Friday Agreement recognized Northern Ireland as a region of Britain and ended decades of political violence in the region. The Republic of Ireland (commonly referred to simply as “Ireland”) is another country.
Eventually, someone at Amazon Support noticed the gaffe and offered to apologize.
We apologize for the error in your colleague’s answer. Northern Ireland and other UK Prime Video subscribers can access and watch the Rugby Autumn Nations Cup on Prime Video as part of their subscription.

The person who tweeted the tweet “We don’t have the right” spelled “Apology” in Z, so I think it was probably American or based in the United States. In the follow-up tweet, S is spelled “Apology”. Normal spelling in other English-speaking countries (including the UK).
Not everyone was amused by the error, but most Twitter did what Twitter did And I inform Amazon Help of the nature of the mistake.
And some describe the situation in words that Amazon may better understand:
I contacted Amazon for comment, but I’ll update it if I get a reply. In the meantime, we hope to lift the Guinness pint and go up the road to meet you as a member of the Amazon Customer Support team.
