That of Julio

“I want to open it, but not until it’s right.” is what Julio Gutiérrez said about the full-service restaurant of contemporary and exclusive Mexican food that bears his name in Second and Corona on Belmont Shore.

It has not yet announced an opening date. But he said the new restaurant with a large bar area will admit dogs. “Dogs behave better than humans,” he said with a smile.

Exterior work has been completed and the work fence has been removed. Large custom booths, expertly crafted Tequila screen, and interior lighting systems are nearing completion.

There were delays in the construction process and, according to Gutierrez, the initial general contractor doing the work died and the new contractor almost had to start all over again.

Gutierrez, who opened his first Baja Fish restaurant in 1996 in Santa Ana, originally bought the Belmont Shore property and made it part of his eight-restaurant chain.

“It didn’t do as expected and we closed,” he said.
