Corona’s 71 highway was closed on Thursday in the Corona area as a 105-acre brush fire sent smoke into the air.
According to the Cal Fire / Riverside County Fire Department, the airport fire was reported on Tuesday at around 5:30 pm on 35 acres in 1900 blocks of Aviation Drive. As of 6:30 am on Thursday, it consumed 105 acres and contained 0%.
Burning flames from heavy riverbed fuel forced Highway 71 to close in both directions from Highway 91 to Highway 83.
When firefighters fought the flames Thursday morning, aerial video showed thick smoke swirling over the freeway.
A flame broke out when a strong wind struck Southern California, warning of an increased risk of fire and powering down throughout the region.
On Wednesday, fire authorities said Big Springs Ct. , Rock Ridge Ct. , Cheyenne Road, Homestead Road, Holster Street, and Lonetree Street residents were warned of evacuation, but the warning was subsequently lifted.
The fire department warned residents not to neglect their vigilance, saying that “the situation may change soon.”
In the adjacent Orange County, a wind-blown brush fire broke out in the Silverado Canyon late Wednesday night, burning thousands of acres and forcing evacuation.
