Air Force names VSFB a candidate for STARCOM HQ

The Air Force announced Tuesday that Vandenberg Space Force Base is among the six candidates for permanent home of STARCOM headquarters.

STARCOM stands for Space Training and Readiness Command and is currently located at Peterson Space Force Base in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

STARCOM is one of three Space Force command centers.

The new headquarters will be responsible for training professionals, developing space warfare training and testing Space Force systems.

“In seeking a permanent base for the Space Training and Readiness Command, Vandenberg has already demonstrated his ability to train pilots and serve on a critical testing ground,” he said in a statement. In 2020, Carbajal signed a letter supporting VSFB becoming a STARCOM office with Sen. Kamala Harris and Sen. Dianne Feinstein.

In addition to political support, the growing pool of local organizations has encouraged the cause to become a new head office.

The Regional Economic Action Coalition (REACH), a local economic support organization, has been pushing for VSFB to become STARCOM’s headquarters since the start of the search.

Melissa James, president / CEO of REACH, said in a statement Tuesday that the company is keen to showcase what the Central Coast has to offer.

“The country is committed to growing commercial areas, and hosting this high -level Space Force command will create a new center of gravity in the Central Coast ecosystem and the environment. advocacy for public and private investment, ”James said.

No time has been set by the Air Force for an official decision, but online research for the six candidates will begin in late April and early May.

The research will evaluate the ability of each site to meet certain requirements in terms of mission, cost, development potential, community support and environmental consideration.

Other sources to consider are Los Angeles Air Force Base in California, Buckley SFB in Colorado, Schriever SFB in Colorado, Peterson SFB in Colorado, and Patrick SFB in Florida.
