Abbott bucks gun control calls because shootings in Chicago where there are ‘real laws’ DON’T work

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said tightening gun laws is not a ‘real solution’ to gun violence, because places like New York and Chicago see more shooting than schools in Texas.

On Tuesday, an 18-year-old police officer opened fire at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, killing 19 children and two teachers.

“I know people like to try to simplify this,” Abbott said in a news release on the shooting Wednesday after being asked if there are any new gun laws he supports. ‘There are’ real gun laws’ in NY. There are real gun laws in there California I hate to say this, but there are more people shot in Chicago every weekend than in schools in Texas. ‘

‘People need to realize – who think well, maybe we can just implement tougher gun laws, it will solve it – Chicago and LA and New York proves that thesis, ‘said the governor.

‘What you’re talking about is not a real solution. It’s our job to come up with real solutions that we can implement. ‘

Abbott blamed the school shooting not on the state’s lax gun laws, but on the ‘mental health crisis’ it faced.

He said he asked a group of Texas sheriffs what the ‘problem’ was, and claimed they told him, ‘We have a mental illness problem in this community.’

‘We as a state, we as a society, need to do better work with mental health. Anyone who shoots another has a mental health challenge. Period, ‘said Abbott.

‘We as a government need to find a way to … do something about it’

Texas ranks 15th for the weakest gun laws of the 50 states, according to the Giffords Law Center. The rate of homicide in the state has risen by 90 percent in recent decades, every year since 2011.

Gun crime has also risen in large cities with strict gun laws – an increase in shootings in Chicago in 2021 left more people dead than in any other year in a quarter of a century. Shootings in New York City are also on the rise, numbering 296 for the first quarter of 2022 compared to the first quarter of 2021. Homicides in Los Angeles hit a 15-year high in 2021, according to police.

Abbott then went on to say that it was legal for 18-year-olds in Texas to buy guns for 60 years, but that school shootings did not take place that long.

“What has changed is mental health.”

Meanwhile, Biden has issued a number of enthusiastic advocates for gun control legislation.

‘This kind of mass shooting rarely happens anywhere else in the world. Why are we ready to live with this massacre? Why do we keep letting this happen? Where in God’s name is our backbone to have the courage to deal with it? It’s time to turn this pain into action, ‘Biden tweeted on Tuesday night.

‘As a nation we must ask: when will we rise up in the name of God against the gun lobby?’ he added. ‘When will we do in the name of God what needs to be done? I enjoyed it. We have to act. ‘

He wrote Wednesday morning: ‘We know that common sense gun laws cannot and will not prevent any tragedy. But we know they work and have a positive impact. When we passed the assault weapon ban. ‘

He said the ability of a teenage gunman, like Salvador Ramos, to ‘run into a gun shop and buy two assault rifles is just wrong.’

“What in God’s name do you need an assault weapon for, except to kill someone?” asked Biden.

Meanwhile, Beto O’Rourke, who is challenging Abbott in the gubernatorial race, beat Abbott for his release of gun policy in Lonestar State.

‘The moment to stop Uvalde was just after Sandy Hook. To Santa Fe High. To El Paso. Instead, Abbott made it easier to carry guns in public, ‘O’Rourke wrote on Twitter.

O’Rourke was escorted from Abbott’s press briefing by police to cause a disturbance. “This is on you!” he shouted at Abbott.

The mayor of Uvalde, Don McLaughlin, roared from his chair, smiling at his walker and shouting, ‘He must get his a ** out of here! Sir, you are out of line! Please leave this auditorium!

‘I can not believe you, sick son of ab ****, you would come to such an event to make it a political issue!

“A ** holes like you, get out of here!”

Abbott currently leads O’Rourke with an average of 6.7 points in the polls, according to a poll average by RealClearPolitics.

Last summer, Abbott signed a law allowing anyone 21 and older who can legally possess a firearm to carry a gun in public without a license.

That law was just one of seven gun rights, another made Texas a ‘Second Amendment Sanctuary’ from future federal gun laws, and another made it legal for gun owners to store firearms in their hotel rooms.

These laws do not appear to have been applied by the Uvalde gunman, Salvador Ramos. But Ramos had legally bought two firearms yesterday days just after his 18th birthday. He paraded the AR-style guns on social media, including in ominous messages sent hours before the murder began.

He also bought more than 300 cartridges of ammunition to use in the attack.

In Texas, people 18 years and older are legally allowed to buy long rifles, such as rifles and hunting rifles. They must be 21 to buy guns. Before he collided with his car and crashed into Robb Elementary, killing 19 students, Ramos had shot his grandmother, who is now in critical condition.

During a news conference Wednesday, Abbott turned his focus to mental health, not weapons.

He said he asked a group of Texas sheriffs what the ‘problem’ was. He says they told him, ‘We have a problem with mental illness in this community.’

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez asked why teens can buy AR-15s before they can even buy beer.

The New York Democrat responded on Twitter to Rep. Lauren Boebert, R-Colo., A staunch gun lawyer, wrote: ‘You can not legislate away evil.’

‘Why even be in Congress if you do not believe in doing your job? ‘Just go ahead and let someone who actually gives it a go do instead act like a useless piece of furniture when babies are shot with AR15s that we boys boys buy impulse before they can legally drink a beer,’ wrote Ocasio-Cortez on Twitter.

Abbott is scheduled to speak at the National Rifle Association (NRA) leadership summit this weekend, and O’Rourke has called on him to retire.

“Governor Abbott, if you are fit, you will immediately withdraw from this weekend’s NRA Convention and encourage them to hold it everywhere except Texas,” he tweeted.
