Police said a 39-year-old man was arrested Saturday in connection with three separate shootings within 24 hours that injured five people in the metro area of Columbus, Georgia.
“They were able to arrest the suspect in the downtown area,” Columbus police chief Freddy Blackmon said at a press conference on Saturday.
According to police, Justin Tiran Roberts has been charged with weighted assault, possession of a gun in the process of a crime, possession of a gun by a convicted serious offender, and theft by receiving stolen goods. Roberts will appear in court on Monday morning.
CNN is working to determine if Roberts is a legal representative.
According to Blackmon, police believe that shootings began across the Chattahoochee River, which borders Phoenix City, Alabama, at the hotel around 8:15 pm EST on Friday night. Shot multiple times outside.
Two hours later, three people were shot dead outside a restaurant in downtown Columbus, police said. After 2:00 pm on Saturday, another person was shot about eight blocks away from previous downtown shootings.
“Our investigators later learned that the suspect’s description was similar to the shootings in Phoenix City and Columbus last night,” Blackmon said.
The Columbus chief says he spoke with his counterpart in Phoenix City, who considers Roberts the main suspect in their shootings.
According to Blackmon, all victims have suffered non-life-threatening injuries, and investigators are working to see if there is any connection between the suspect and the victims.
Columbus Mayor Skip Henderson said at a news conference that he understands that residents still have many concerns about their safety.
“The events of the last 24 hours have caused a lot of fear and anxiety throughout the community,” said Henderson, who asked residents to assist in the investigation with available information. “Our community is trying to send a message that it does not tolerate meaningless violence.”
