Saldana Zuniga returned from behind the wheel recently, nine years after an accident that paralyzed him from the waist down.

He participated in a technological innovation that has been created for over a year, pioneered by the Colorado neurosurgeon Dr. Scott Fauci and his team, reported KCNC-TV.

A microchip in his brain that communicates with a computer in a specialized car allows him to be behind the wheel again, without touching the accelerator even once.

“Be in it and just watch it go smoothly on the track and it responds to what you think,” Zuniga said. “It’s just unbelievable.”

A special helmet allows him to steer.

“The computer can take this electronic fingerprint and power it into the race car,” Fauci said.

The neurosurgeon said the technology could possibly be used in other ways: driving an electric wheelchair or golf cart or controlling a robotic arm.

“Once we develop this science, this science can be used for all types of systems,” Fauci said.
