Pasadena (CBSLA) — On Wednesday, a man was arrested on suspicion of setting fire to a Kathleen’s restaurant in Pasadena.

It happened early in the morning when the good Samaritan Michael Shuk was heading to work.

“I noticed the bushes burning in front of the restaurant,” he said. “I did a kind of double take.”

Sheikh said he saw a man roaming in the area, but he didn’t know what he was doing.

On-site security footage showed two men outside the restaurant just before smoke and flames were seen coming out of the restaurant’s front door.

“I was literally shell shocked,” said restaurant owner Kathleen Maymarian. “It was impossible to absorb it just by coming in as soon as I heard it and seeing the damage.”

Kathleen’s has been serving food in Pasadena for 40 years. And after already having a terrible year, the owner was horrified to see the restaurant damaged by the arson suspect.

“During COVID, business is declining by at least 70% because it’s almost impossible to survive on takeaway alone,” says Meymarian.

But Maymarian said he couldn’t fall without a fight.

“I decided to stick it out no matter what curve was thrown. This was definitely another big curve,” she said.

When police and firefighters arrived at the scene, they were able to stop the fire from spreading and immediately arrested Christopher Richard on suspicion of arson.

Fortunately, the damage mainly included the main dining room and the side dining room with the kitchen intact. But the loss could not have come at a worse time.

Maymarian said her co-owner Efren was diagnosed with leukemia during the peak of the pandemic and during the pitfalls of the business struggle.

So now, with the preparation for a bone marrow transplant, he has to put together a piece of life work for him and his partner.

“We are determined to stick it out,” Meymarian said. “Save your business and save his life.”

Maymarian said he hoped to resume by the weekend, but said it was the result of a city inspection.

Pasadena police said the investigation was underway.
