Background: The original building was built in the 1920s and is a local landmark. A complete remodeling of what used to be a K’ya Bistro could ruin the charm of Spanish revival. Therefore, M. Matthew Winter from Winter Design (he created the look for Gjusta Bakery in Venice, Fia Restaurant in Santa Monica, and Manuela in Los Angeles) came to the rescue. He grew up in such a house and is now a style expert living in the stable / groom attendant’s house he restored. It was once owned by Jean Harlow, the movie queen of the 1930s.

appearance: In Comedor, Winter restored hardwood floors and heavy wooden beams overhead, retaining most of what was there. He took some parts out of storage. The chandelier was rewired and reattached to the room. Eye-catching is the delicately processed wrought iron with feathers and other Baroque touches such as fake taper.

“We wanted to have a little beachy feel. It was a little lighter, a little more casual, flashy and inaccessible. So we used the original material that would have been used at the time. I used it a lot, “says Winter.

He paid special attention to the fireplace in the original lobby, holding handmade tiles and echoing more painted tiles under the Carrara marble bar added to the dining room. The seats consist of a readjusted Thonet chair with a swirl back, a style popular during the heyday of Spain’s revival.

The color scheme is a sun-dried white background with emerald and seafoam green and blue sea shades and a brown touch of driftwood. Homemade dishes in Oaxaca are served in off-white and light terracotta soft neutral. Copper-colored tableware shines in the candlelight.

Vibe: The lobby has a calm, bohemian look, with comfortable furniture in a mismatched pattern and plenty of cushioning that makes you look like you’re at home. When Bette Davis settles in Laguna and the stars sneak up on the Orange County on the weekends and escape from the paparazzi, it’s all reminiscent of the golden age of Hollywood.

drink: The special cocktail list is curated by Devon Espinosa. Of course, there is also a delicious margarita called Miss Amigos with tequila, anchovies chili liqueur, lime and agave. However, there are many cocktails that are suitable for Instagram with great decoration. La Brisa has gin, lile blanc, saint gelman, lemon, rose water, payshaws bitters, and rose petals floating on top. A mix of mezcal aperol with lemon and pineapple — Mariachi on the Beach — sports pineapple slices with pointed leaves.

menu: Vigneron’s family once had a vacation in Laguna, so he jumped at the opportunity to have a restaurant there. He worked with a Spanish superstar, so he is also an ideal chef for writing tapas menus. Jose Andre And Ferran Adrià.

This menu may be noisy and unformal, but a few chews reveal its great dining prowess. The carrot fritters with tamarind sauce of apricots, dill, raisins and yogurt are a little sweet and amazing. Bread contemate can be fortified with Hamon Serrano (Spanish ham) and Manchego cheese. Paella-style vermicelli stuffed with red shrimp, shrimp and squid, Rosse Jat de Fideos enhances flavor from delicate Bonita flakes.

Tapas are $ 4-18, entrees are $ 25-34, and desserts are $ 11-13.

“I think it’s a fun way to eat,” Vigneron said. “Under the tapas umbrella, we have all the ingredients in California, from fresh fish to great vegetables, which gives us endless opportunities to create new tapas on top of what’s already laid. Spain. ”

What to wear: You don’t want to come in a dripping wet swimsuit, but most of the time. Go casual on the beach or dress up on a date night. This is not your typical formal hotel dining room.

Insider Tips: “Comedor” means dining room in Spanish, but when we visited, many people said “commodore”, which looks good on this seaside town. As long as you have fun, the staff doesn’t care what you say it.

duel: Vigneron lives in Malibu and is in constant demand as a well-known chef. Therefore, although not announced yet, you will need a chef or sous-chef. The selection process sounds like a mini version of “Top Chef”. “Honestly, there are some people who are worth it now,” he said. “But I’m like getting them to the top.”

The last word: In winter, we want to be moved by the people who eat. “I want you to feel like you’re stepping into an era supported by a familiar, comfortable and cozy environment.” “Your eyes are looking around the details in space so much that you don’t have time to call. That’s what we’re trying to do.”

information: Open Wednesday to Sunday from 5 pm to 11 pm. 1289 S. Coast Hwy in La Casa del Camino Hotel. , Laguna Beach, 949-376-9718, comedorlaguna.com.
